🎧  Listen to Introduction

The Dragon Horn Dance is mainly spread in Shangping Township, Yong'an City, Fujian Province and nearby towns. It was created in the local dialect Yong'an. It was originally spread among the people as a performance form in the Taoist temple. Most of them are based on praying for a healthy life, a good harvest, peace in the world, and harmonious coexistence between the four villages and eight neighbors. The walking method of the Dragon Horn Dance has a complete set of strict and unique movements. It pays great attention to the coordination and unity between the head, eyes, mouth, shoulders, hands, and feet, and the performance form of the whole set of movements is the same as the method listed in the scriptures: when the lyrics are sung to the east, the front of the body must face the east, when it is said to the west, it must face the west, when it is read to the south, it must face the south, and when it is pointed to the north, it must face the north. The Dragon Horn Dance pays great attention to the clever use of dance postures, especially the dancing of the hands and feet. The movements of the palms are generally shown with orchid fingers; the footsteps, no matter how large the range of movement of walking, walking, circling, running, squatting, striding, and jumping is, finally settle with the "Ding" step, and the whole set of movements is very ornamental. The props of the Dragon Horn Dance include: a 1.5-meter-long crescent-shaped dragon horn, a 20-centimeter-diameter drum, a 25-centimeter-long gong, a Wutai Mountain hat, a red cloth apron, and a book of "Dragon Horn Dance". The "dragon horn" was originally made of deformed curved bamboo shoots from the mountains. However, since it is difficult to grasp the time between the growth of bamboo shoots into bamboo, the "dragon horns" made are easy to break and difficult to preserve. Therefore, people gradually used tin as the raw material to make the current "tin horn" with a total length of 1.5 meters and two sections that can be extended and retracted in a crescent shape. The Dragon Horn Dance is a folk rap work deeply rooted in the folk. It is a prominent manifestation of Yong'an's local traditional culture. It has a significant impact on the inheritance and development of Yong'an dialect and is of great value to the study of folklore, sociology, and dance.
