The Yongding Tujia custom of "Hucang" is mainly spread in the rural towns and villages of Yongding District, Zhangjiajie City, which are mainly engaged in farming. It is the product of the continuation of ancient farming culture. The process of "Hucang" is divided into three parts: opening the seedling gate, eating covered bowl meat and Hucang. A ceremony is held for "opening the seedling gate". Everyone elects an old man of high moral character to pull the first seedling first. Pulling the first seedling is quite particular. No matter what the orientation of the seedling field is, you must first face the east to raise half of the seedling, and then face the south to raise the other half, and then close them together, and then tie them with straw, fork the two halves and place them on the ridge of the field. The old man shouted at the top of his voice: "Open the seedling gate!" and then recite a blessing. "Eating covered bowl meat" means that when eating breakfast, the host will cover the big earthen bowl on the table with a large piece of fat, greasy bacon, about half an inch thick, the size of a palm, and weighing three or four taels. This piece of meat cannot be eaten casually. It is not enough to have the courage to eat it. The key is that someone needs to take the lead in this day's work. This leader is the owner of this piece of meat in a bowl. He (she) must be a fast planter. Therefore, whoever eats this piece of meat means a kind of ability, a responsibility, and a kind of commitment. If you can't refuse, the old man at the table will decide who to give it to, and whoever will be the leader. "Hucang" is the 0 of planting rice, which is held at the end. In a rice field, there are many people who help plant rice. Everyone is holding back a lot of energy in their hearts to see who can plant the fastest. Those who plant slowly are often surrounded by those who plant quickly, and finally locked in the middle of the rice field and can't get out. This is called "locking the pig cage". At this time, the person who plants quickly will walk on the ridge of the field and take the lead in grabbing the mud ball and throwing it at the person who locked the pig cage. There are also people who specifically throw mud all over the owner. The more mud is thrown on the owner, the happier the owner is. In the end, a game of chasing each other will be staged in the field. The Tujia people call it "Hucang". "Hucang" means good weather and good harvest. The more mud on someone's body, the better the harvest. The grain stored in the warehouse will not be bitten by rats or eaten by insects, and each grain will be full and golden. The folk custom of "Hucang" reveals good hope and blessings.
