🎧  Listen to Introduction

Hezhou Xianxiao, also known as "Hezhou Singing", "Xianxiao Playing and Singing", "Hezhou Sanxian Shanshu", "Linxia Xianxiao", "Hezhou Tune", etc., is a traditional folk art form spread in Linxia, Gansu. It was formed in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and got its name because the performance content mostly promoted the content of persuading good and punishing evil, loyal ministers and good generals, and virtuous wives and filial sons. The traditional performance form of Hezhou Xianxiao is one person (mainly a blind person in the past) holding a Sanxian, playing and singing by himself. There are many programs, most of which are compiled by artists based on books and passed down from generation to generation. In order to distinguish them, artists call programs that show the rise and fall of a country and loyal ministers and generals "national letters", such as "Wu Zixu Crossing the River", "Romance of the Three Kingdoms", "Xue Rengui's Expedition to the East", "Yang Family Generals", "Bao Gong's Case", etc.; programs that reflect filial piety to parents and love between men and women in daily life are called "family letters"; in addition, there are programs such as "Wang Xiang Lying on Ice", "Guo Ju Burying His Son", "Meng Zong Crying at Bamboo" with stories of "Twenty-Four Filial Piety" as the content, and programs such as "White Ape Stealing Peaches", "Meeting in the Flower Hall", and "Little Ding Ding". Hezhou Xianxiao has a long history and simple form. However, due to the changes in the social environment on which it depends for survival and development, its display platform in the vast urban and rural areas has gradually disappeared, and it is in urgent need of protection.
