Sunan Yugur Autonomous County is located in the middle of the Hexi Corridor and the northern foot of the Qilian Mountains. The Yugur people use two languages. One is called "Yaohuer", which belongs to the Turkic language family of the Altaic language family and is closely related to the Uyghur and Kazakh languages of the same language family; the other is called "Anger", which is closely related to the Mongolian language of the same language family. From the historical origins and language of the Yugur people, their folk songs have the same origin and flow relationship with the Uighur folk songs and Mongolian folk songs, and the lyrics and rhythms also have many similarities. In addition, they also have many commonalities of ancient languages. Yugur folk songs can be divided into "narrative songs", "love songs", "labor songs" and so on according to the subject matter, and can be divided into "small songs", "calls", "small tunes", "banquet songs", "wine songs", "felt rolling songs", "milk and livestock songs" and so on according to the genre and function. It is an important basis for studying the folk songs of ancient northern minorities, especially the Turkic and Mongolian folk songs and the cultural history of ancient northern nomadic peoples, and it is also the basis for exploring and developing the music of northern minorities. At present, Sunan County has compiled and published books, CDs and tapes such as "Chinese Ethnic Folk Songs of Sunan Yugu Autonomous County" (124 songs), "Blessing the Grassland", "Yugu Homeland", and "Fragrant Grassland". More than 310 Yugu folk songs have been compiled and collected. In recent years, the number of Yugu singers, who are the carriers of folk songs, has decreased. Most folk songs have disappeared with the death of singers, and they are in urgent need of rescue and protection.
