🎧  Listen to Introduction

Kangxian Singing Book is now a municipal intangible cultural heritage project. Kangxian Singing Book is mainly spread in the northern and central areas of Kangxian County along the Northern Tea Horse Road. Local people also call it reading books. It is a very infectious original folk art. It was first evolved from the storytelling stories circulated in Sichuan and Shaanxi in the late Ming Dynasty. With the prosperity of the tea-horse trade at that time, the caravans brought goods and these storytelling stories also entered Wudu, Kangxian and other places in Gansu, and gradually evolved into a folk storytelling art that the people of Kangxian County love to hear and see. Kangxian Singing Book is mainly in Kangxian dialect. There are four types of sentence patterns: seven-character sentence, five-character sentence, ten-character sentence, and lotus flower. The lyrics are concise and easy to understand, and the singing is tortuous and melodious. There is no fixed time or place for the performance. In the past, it was mostly performed during the slack season. During the performance, the villagers from all over the neighborhood sat around the fire pit in the living room of a certain family, or gathered in the threshing ground in the village. Now they are mostly sung in the village cultural square and village cultural activity room. There are no special requirements for the performers' clothing, which are generally daily clothes, and can also be matched with local traditional ethnic costumes. The accompaniment instruments are mainly sanxian, Tu Pipa and other plucked instruments, and they are also accompanied by bells or bamboo chopsticks hitting small porcelain plates. The lyrics are mostly based on historical stories, legendary figures, benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and trustworthiness and other traditional cultures. There are more than 20 traditional repertoires represented by "Mulian Saves His Mother". (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
