In 2006, the Dong Lusheng was selected into the first batch of provincial intangible cultural heritage list. In 2008, it was selected into the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. Tongdao Dong Autonomous County Cultural Bureau is the main body of protection. Bamboo is the main material for making Lusheng, such as Nanzhu, Zizhu, Jinzhu, Shuizhu, Mianzhu, Baizhu, Kuzhu, etc. Among them, Baizhu is the best material for making Lusheng. Generally, more than three years old bamboo is used to make Lusheng. In order to make an ideal Lusheng, Dong craftsmen pay great attention to seasonality when cutting bamboo, mostly after the beginning of autumn and before the beginning of spring every year. According to their practical experience, bamboo cut in this season is relatively hard and will not be infested with insects. Dong Lusheng is basically equipped with two to three resonance tubes to amplify the volume. The sound frequency of the resonance tube must be the same as the sound frequency of the bamboo tube to produce resonance, otherwise it is futile. Generally speaking, the length of the resonance tube is about one-fourth of the length of the bamboo tube. Dong craftsmen can make double bass, bass, tenor, alto, treble and extra-treble Lusheng. The longest double bass Lusheng can reach two or three feet, and the shortest extra-treble Lusheng is only two or three inches. Generally, the alto of three or four feet is the most common. After the transformation of Lusheng craftsmen, there are currently 17 types of Dong Lusheng, including "Lunzheng", "Lunni", "Lunwo", and "Lunlue". The big Lusheng is used to play the bass. When playing, it is fixed in one place, standing tall and solemn. The small and medium Lushengs play the main melody, and the small Lusheng also serves as the lead. When the large, medium and small Lushengs are played together, the high and low notes echo each other, the range is wide, the tones are diverse, and the momentum is magnificent. The Dong people enjoy playing Lusheng. They can't do without playing Lusheng during festivals, weddings, funerals, and harvest celebrations. Sometimes local people hold Lusheng playing competitions, with dozens or even hundreds of Lushengs playing at the same time, creating a spectacular scene.
