Legend of Peach Blossom Spring
Heading northeast from Changshan County, crossing mountains and ridges, wading through streams and crossing bridges, bypassing Furong Lake and going another 30 miles, you will arrive at the "Peach Blossom Spring", a paradise on earth with beautiful mountains and clear waters, and peach and bamboo trees. "Peach Blossom Spring" is the name of a natural village, located in Wushikeng Village, Xinqiao Township, on the edge of the northeastern mountainous area of Changshan County, and only one mountain away from Chun'an County, Hangzhou City. Peach Blossom Spring is backed by Baijuhuajian, the highest peak in Changshan. There are two streams in the village, which flow all year round. One is called Taohua Creek and the other is called Baiyun Creek. They are like two ribbons, intersecting and merging in the village, passing through. The water jumps and flows on the stone stream, clear to the bottom. Put your hands together and take a sip, it is cool and sweet, refreshing. The stones in these two streams, especially Taohua Creek, are quite unique: they are dark and shiny, very different from the stones in other streams. Tracing back to the reason, there is a bizarre and fascinating legend. Legend has it that during the grand "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea", eight immortals including Tieguai Li and Lü Dongbin showed their magical powers and made a big fuss in the East China Sea. They were well taught a lesson by the Jade Emperor and the Queen Mother, and they stayed quiet for a while without causing any trouble. The Heavenly Palace also seemed much more peaceful. Who knows, immortals can't stand loneliness more than mortals. Lü Dongbin has always been obsessed with traveling and helping the world, so he couldn't stand staying in a small room to discuss Taoism every day. Soon, he quietly slipped out of the Heavenly Palace alone, traveled to famous mountains and rivers, enjoyed the beauty of the world, and lived a carefree life. But it is said that Lü Dongbin was riding on a cloud that day, overlooking the landscape of the earth, and suddenly saw a towering mountain, like a sword piercing the sky, magnificent and spectacular. Lü Dongbin was overjoyed and quickly turned down the cloud to take a closer look. After asking the villagers nearby, I learned that the mountain was called "Bai Ju Hua Jian", which is one of the highest mountains within a radius of hundreds of miles. On Bai Ju Hua Jian, there are towering ancient trees, flowers and grass everywhere, and flocks of birds. The mountain is filled with mist all year round, and the air is fragrant. The whole mountain forest is in an atmosphere that is both real and illusory, and both virtual and real, just like a fairyland of Qiong Yao. Several mountain streams converge into a stream, hanging down from the steep rock wall, forming a "Bai Ju Hua Waterfall" like flying snow and silver silk. The waterfall and spring water turned into a stream, flowing through a village at the foot of Bai Ju Hua Jian Mountain, nourishing and feeding the people who have worked hard for generations there. Seeing this, Lü Dongbin was very envious and asked what the name of the village was. The locals told him that it was called "Da Yuan". Because of the pronunciation of the dialect, Lü Dongbin mistakenly heard it as "Tao Yuan". He turned around but did not find a peach tree. He shook his head helplessly, feeling deeply regretful. In a blink of an eye, it was the birthday of the Queen Mother, and the heavenly court was filled with joy. Various gods and immortals came to congratulate her, and Lü Dongbin and other eight immortals also brought gifts to attend the birthday banquet. At the Peach Banquet, everyone was free to drink the fragrant and intoxicating wine, and the round, shiny, and delicious peaches were free to taste. The immortals drank and chatted, some drank and played swords, and some recited poems and played the piano. They all showed their best skills to add color to the banquet, which was very lively. Among them, Lü Dongbin and He Xiangu were the most outstanding among the eight immortals. They performed a Tai Chi sword and a lotus dance, which were both hard and soft, and won the applause of the immortals. When the dance reached the most exciting part, Lü Dongbin couldn't help but roar to the sky, full of pride. Unexpectedly, a peach pit that had just been eaten in his mouth was blurted out with a whistling sound and disappeared. At that time, the immortals were drinking happily and no one cared. Besides, the peach pit that Lü Dongbin spit out was actually a black peach pit, which fell into the mortal world and happened to fall into the land at the foot of Baijuhuajian Mountain. It turned out that all this was done intentionally by Lü Dongbin. When he saw the peaches, he thought of the "Taoyuan" without peaches, so he deliberately danced with a sword and used the whistling sound to spit out the pit, planting the peach pit in the "Taoyuan". Soon, the black peach pit sprouted and bred a dense black peach forest. From then on, every spring, peach blossoms reflected the river water on both sides of the stream in Dayuan Village, and they were paired across the stream, forming a pink world. Peach Blossom Spring and Peach Blossom Stream got their names from this. Gradually, black peaches became a fruit treasure in the minds of local people and were praised as "Black Girl" and "Black Spade Queen". The Immortals Searching for Peaches The day after her birthday, the Queen Mother counted with her fingers and found that one of the peach pits was missing. After a careful check, she found that it was Lü Dongbin who did it. However, it was too late. As the saying goes, "One day in heaven is a thousand years on earth." A thousand years have passed on earth, and the black peach pit has long grown into a peach forest all over the mountains. In a rage, the Queen Mother wanted to expel Lü Dongbin from the immortal list and banish him to the mortal world for reincarnation. Under the pleadings of the immortals, the Jade Emperor finally issued an order: Lü Dongbin left the peach pit in the mortal world, which violated the rules of heaven and should be severely punished. In consideration of his sincere heart for benefiting the people, he was specially punished to go down to the mortal world to retrieve the black peach pit and atone for his sins. Lü Dongbin had no choice but to accept the order and go down to the mortal world. He Xiangu believed that she and Lü Dongbin had danced together at the time of the incident and should be punished at the same time. She insisted on accompanying Lü Dongbin to go down to the mortal world to find the peach pit. Arriving at Taohuayuan, Lü Dongbin happily wandered around the village, admiring the beautiful black peach forest with great interest. He Xiangu was puzzled when she saw that Lü Dongbin had not started to look for the black peach kernels. Lü Dongbin then told her the cause and effect of the matter in detail, and said: "Once the black peach kernels are recovered, the black peaches here will suffer a catastrophe, just as a stream will dry up one day without a source. By then, all the black peach trees will slowly wither and die, and there will be no more black peaches in the world. I really can't bear it!" After hearing this, He Xiangu felt compassionate, but she had no choice. So she accompanied Lü Dongbin to wander around and enjoy the mountains and rivers all day long. One morning, when she was sitting by the Taohua Creek washing her comb, she accidentally dropped the comb on a stone by the creek, smashing the stone into a deep pit, and a few strands of hair on the comb fell into the pit and slowly grew into a bunch of beautiful flowers and plants. Later, the locals called it "combing stone", and some called it "fairy stone". Lü Dongbin wandered among the mountains and rivers every day, enjoying himself. Although he faced the beautiful mountains and peaks every day, "looking at it horizontally, it looks like a ridge, looking at it from the side, it looks like a sword, looking at it from the front, it looks like a bell", Lü Dongbin always felt that he couldn't see enough. So, he simply found a big stone by the stream, lazily lying on it, admiring the beautiful scenery of the mountains and rivers, and enjoying the tranquility of the sunset and sunrise. Over time, a flat "lying fairy stone" like a mat was formed. It is also said that Lü Dongbin turned into a Buddha to sleep on this stone to enjoy the scenery in order to avoid the eyes and ears of the Queen Mother, so it is also called "lying Buddha stone". But after Lü Dongbin went down to the world to find the core, the Queen Mother was not at ease, so she quietly followed behind, hiding in the mountains and forests, monitoring their every move. One day, the Queen Mother was sitting on the hillside tracking and monitoring, and suddenly found Lü Dongbin and He Xiangu walking up the mountain. She hurriedly got up to avoid them and looked for a hiding place. In her haste, she bumped her lotus throne into a stone, knocking off a diamond-shaped lotus petal. After the lotus petal left the Queen Mother's lotus throne, it soon turned into a diamond-shaped boulder, which people called "Niangniang Stone" or "Lao Niang Stone". Since the Queen Mother controls life and death, disaster and fortune, and symbolizes the highest authority, whenever a child is weak or sick, the local villagers will light incense and candles in front of the Lao Niang Stone, place offerings, kneel down and worship, and pray to the Queen Mother to bless the child with good health and good luck. This is the local traditional custom of "worshiping Lao Niang". After Lü Dongbin found out that the Queen Mother was following him, he winked at He Xiangu and said in a pretentious manner: "To find the black peach pit, you need to find a tool first." He Xiangu laughed and said: "Isn't your sword that you always carry with you a suitable tool?" Lü Dongbin laughed and said: "You are really confused! Let me try the sharpness of the sword." After that, he walked to a big rock, swung the sword and chopped it down. With a "cut" sound, the big rock split into two halves. This is the origin of the "Sword Testing Stone". Nowadays, if you observe carefully on both sides of Taohua Creek, you will find many peach-shaped big rocks that have been split into two halves. Local people say that this is the evidence of Lü Dongbin swinging his sword to split the stone to find the black peach pit in order to perfunctory the Queen Mother. The Queen Mother secretly observed for a long time, but did not find any flaws, so she had to return to heaven. In order to protect the black peach seeds in the human world, Lü Dongbin turned the black peach pit he found into a stone and hid it in the pile of boulders in Taohua Creek. No one could tell whether it was real or fake. Now, the huge stone standing at the entrance of Taohuayuan Village is said to be the incarnation of the black peach pit lost in heaven. It has become the image stone of Taohuayuan. When the two dragons collected the peaches and the deadline for returning to heaven came, Lü Dongbin lied to the Jade Emperor according to the excuse he had agreed with He Xiangu, saying that the black peach pit had fallen into the mortal world and turned into gas and could not be found. The Jade Emperor had no choice but to think that a black peach pit would not cause any harm, so he imprisoned Lü Dongbin and punished him. However, the noble Pantao sacred fruit falling into the mortal world is not allowed by the heavenly rules. The Queen Mother is the mistress of the heavenly court, so she naturally has to do her best to maintain the dignity of the heavenly rules. After thinking about it, she finally came up with a good plan to recover the black peaches. It turned out that when she followed Lü Dongbin last time, she found two giant dragons in the stone cave on the back mountain of Taohuayuan. So she gave them a pill to help the dragons become spirits as soon as possible, and ordered them to destroy the black peach forest in Taohuayuan, so as to achieve the purpose of recovering the black peach kernels. After taking the pill, the two dragons finally became spirits. In the middle of the night, the thunder in Taohuayuan shook the earth, lightning swept across, heavy rain, and strong winds raged. The sleeping people got up in a daze and closed the doors and windows to avoid the wind and rain. An old couple named Wang lived on the back mountain. That night, the old woman of the Wang family was awakened by the thunder and couldn't fall asleep. She pushed the old man beside her, but she only heard him snoring like thunder and sleeping soundly. She got up by herself, lit the oil lamp, and looked out through the window to observe the movement. Suddenly, accompanied by a flash of lightning and a roar of thunder, she saw through the window that two huge fireballs were ejected from the cliffs of the back mountain and were rushing down towards Taohua Creek. In an instant, the ground outside was shaking, and all kinds of loud noises were mixed and deafening. It was faintly felt that there seemed to be a tornado carrying floods and rocks, roaring and rushing towards the downstream of the stream. The old woman of the Wang family had never seen such a scene before, and was almost scared to death. She felt like she was having a nightmare, and soon she fell on the bed and fell asleep. The next morning, when she woke up, she opened the door half-doubtfully and looked outside. The scene outside shocked her: the two sides of the stream had changed beyond recognition. The Taohua Creek, which used to be a place where peach blossoms and flowing water reflected each other, had become a bare deep pit. The black peach trees and various flowers, plants and trees on both sides were washed away, and the scene was devastated and horrible. The black peaches that were about to mature were smashed and squeezed to pieces. The red and black black peach juice flowed into the stream, dyeing the entire stream black. The stones in the stream were also dyed black and red, becoming extremely hard. When the old woman of the Wang family told the villagers what she had seen and heard, everyone guessed that the two fireballs were the incarnations of two giant dragons. Later, Taohua Creek was called Wushikeng. The place where the old woman of the Wang family lived was called Longmenkan because it was facing the hole where the giant dragon broke through the wall. Today, there is still a huge stone cave hanging high on the concave stone wall behind Longmenkan. A clear spring poured down and turned into a Longmen Waterfall with a drop of about 40 meters, which has become one of the main sources of Taohua Creek. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
