Xingshan County belonged to Nanjun during the Han Dynasty. In the third year of Yong'an (260) during the Three Kingdoms period, Xingshan was established by dividing Zigui from its northern border. Xingshan is located in the remnant of Daba Mountain and on the north side of Xiling Gorge of the Yangtze River. It is adjacent to Yichang City and Baokang County in the east, Zigui County in the south, Shennongjia Forest District in the north, and Badong County in the west. Xingshan folk songs are distributed in various towns and villages in Xingshan County and its surrounding areas in the east, south, and north. Xingshan folk songs have a long history and rich resources. Some scholars in the domestic music community have identified them as the remains of "Jingchu ancient songs". This view can be confirmed by the tone structure of Zenghouyi chime bells, especially the bronze bells and chimes of the Shang and Zhou dynasties unearthed in Changyang County in this area. The tonality of Xingshan folk songs is peculiar, and people who have received modern music training often mistakenly believe that they are "not sung correctly". In fact, it contains an interval between major and minor thirds in the scale structure, which is named "Xingshan third interval". The structural relationship of the only two three-tone cavity in Xingshan is as follows: Do-Mi-Solla-Do ()-Re35015300153501518015 Its pentatonic scale is built on them, also known as the "Xingshan scale": (Fa) Sol () LaDo () ReMiSol This unique scale proves that there is an oral culture in Jingchu music culture that is consistent with the musical instrument archaeological discovery. Common repertoires of Xingshan folk songs include "Zhengdong", "Zhengxi", "Xue Gang's Rebellion against Tang", "Ten Farewells", "Ten Thoughts", "Five Watches", etc. Due to the rapid changes in society, fewer and fewer people can sing Xingshan folk songs nowadays. If we do not vigorously rescue and protect them, this unique song will face the risk of being lost.
