Tongshan County's specific geographical environment has formed the unique folk traditional culture of the people of Tongshan - mountain songs and mountain drums. Tongshan mountain songs, also known as woodcutters' songs, are folk songs sung by local people in unique tones and dialects passed down from generation to generation. Its singing styles are rich, including high-pitched mountain songs, flat-pitched mountain songs, crying mountain songs, pan songs, and urgent commands. Mountain drums are folk songs accompanied by "beating mountain drums". Tongshan County is vast and sparsely populated. During the busy farming season, people freely form collective labor groups. When working, they usually beat mountain drums to encourage work. Tongshan mountain drums are called "digging mountain drums" when working in the mountains, and "planting field drums" when working in paddy fields. The mountain drums have crisp sounds and free rhythms. When the drums sound and the songs start, the mountains are full of drums and mountain songs, presenting a scene of bustling labor. Tongshan people have a tradition of playing mountain drums and singing folk songs. The Tongzhi edition of Tongshan County Chronicles in the Qing Dynasty states: "The clear light on the mountain wall, the night scenery between the bridges, the fishermen's songs and woodcutters' singing, the field drums and temple bells." The woodcutters' songs refer to mountain songs, and the field drums refer to the Zaitian drums among the mountain drums. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, folk art forms such as Tongshan mountain songs and mountain drums have developed. In recent years, Tongshan County has seen a "mountain song fever" and "mountain drum fever", which has promoted the construction of "two civilizations" in the county. In 2006, five items including "mountain drums" and "mountain songs" of Tongshan County were on the list of the first batch of 13 municipal-level "intangible cultural heritage lists" announced by Xianning City; recently, "Tongshan mountain drums" (haocao gongs and drums) and "Legend of Li Chuangwang" were announced by the Provincial People's Government as the first batch of provincial-level "intangible cultural heritages".
