Hainan butterfly wing paintings use butterfly wings as the main material. Through scientific and technological methods, they are softened, spread, moth-proof, anti-corrosion, dried, and post-production, and more than 30 manual processes are carried out. The unique patterns are used to collage the craft paintings with oil painting, Chinese painting, and gouache painting effects using special techniques. Hainan has a forest coverage rate of 51.5%, and is rich in butterfly resources, with more than 500 species, especially in mountainous areas such as Jianfengling and Diaoluo Mountain. Among various butterflies, the Golden Swallowtail, the Wide-band Swallowtail with Transparent Wings, the Arrow-patterned Beautiful Nymph, the Pecked Butterfly, and the Purple Light Butterfly are rare species in China. The butterfly resources with large numbers but not among the national protected species provide unique conditions for the production of Hainan butterfly wing paintings. At present, there are more than 200 specifications and varieties of butterfly paintings produced in Hainan. The butterfly wing paintings are vivid, well-made, and exquisitely decorated, showing a strong Chinese national traditional culture.
