Yazhou folk songs are one of the ancient types of Hainan folk songs. According to the archaeological findings of the ancient human site of Luobi Cave in Sanya City, "Sanya people" had lived here 10,000 years ago. In the fifth year of Kaibao (972) of Emperor Taizu of Song Dynasty, Yazhou was established, and the state government was located in Yacheng Town of Sanya City today, governing Ningyuan and Jiyang counties (now Sanya and Huangliu area). Folk songs produced and circulated in this area are collectively called Yazhou folk songs. Yazhou folk songs have obvious traces of the influence of Buddhist "fasting songs" and the format of Tang poetry. Buddhism was introduced to Hainan in the Tang Dynasty, and Dayun Temple was first built in Yacheng Town of Sanya City (i.e. ancient Yazhou). The sighing tunes of Yazhou folk songs came from "fasting songs", which must have a certain relationship with the chanting and singing in the temple. Yazhou folk songs have a wide range of themes and rich content. The lyrics are mostly seven-character, covering all areas from humanities and history, scenery to production and labor, and social life. There are no less than a hundred long narrative poems that have been discovered, which are treasures among Yazhou folk songs. The tunes of Yazhou folk songs are beautiful and melodious, including calls, hawking tunes, major tunes, tender tunes, sighing tunes, and minor tunes. Common songs include "Ten Farewells to My Lover", "Song of Liang Sheng", "Song of Zhang Sheng", "Meng Lijun", "Zhu Chunyuan", etc. Yazhou folk songs are popular among the masses and are an important spiritual food for the masses. They have been passed down through oral transmission for a long time. Under the impact of the trend of modernization, this kind of folk music is difficult to compete with the surging popular music. If it is not rescued and protected in time, it will disappear with the departure of the inheritors.
