Ninghai Paper Cutting

🎧  Listen to Introduction

Paper cutting is a beautiful folk art in my country and an extension of paper cutting skills. It has a long history, is rooted in the masses, and has always been loved by people. In ancient times, there was a custom of cutting colored paper to welcome the New Year. On the day of the beginning of spring, people cut colored paper into flowers and posted them on walls, windows, and lanterns, and everyone watched and commented on each other. During the Qingming Festival, people cut paper banners, paper figures, etc. to pay tribute to their ancestors. Paper cutting is also reflected in appreciation and use. It is used on the base pattern of women's embroidery in the old days. They cut shoe flowers, pillow flowers, bed sheet flowers, etc., and then embroider them. Folk paper cutting has many meanings, symbolizing auspiciousness, good luck, longevity, wealth and happiness. The works are drawn from a wide range of materials, including figures, landscapes, flowers and birds, animals, scenic spots, buildings, etc., which can all be vividly reflected. After five processes such as designing patterns, fixing positions, carving, peeling off, and pasting, the works are perfectly presented. When Zhong Luye was a child, she liked paper cutting and embroidery, and was often praised by neighbors. In 2000, when the office building of Dianqian Wang Village in Qiaotouhu Street was completed, Zhong Luye tried to send a paper-cut of "Double Dragons Fighting for a Pearl" to the village committee with her embroidery skills, which was well received by village cadres and villagers. Since then, she has developed a strong interest in creation and rich creative inspiration, and devoted herself to paper-cutting, and later changed from paper-cutting to paper-cutting. Zhong Luye obtains creative inspiration by reading books, observing details of life, and providing others, and then cuts paper after artistic conception. The paper-cuts of "One Hundred and Eight Generals of the Water Margin" and "Hundred Birds Paying Homage to the Phoenix" are delicate and have both form and spirit. The sharp and thin parts are like pine needles and wheat awns; the round parts are like autumn moon; the square parts are like blue bricks, exactly the same; the defects, such as saw teeth, are delicate and symmetrical; the lines are as thin as beards, and seem to be elegant at first glance. With the continuous improvement of skills, Zhong Luye's paper-cutting has participated in various competitions in recent years and has won high praise. At present, she has become the best paper-cutter in Ninghai. However, with the emergence of modern technology and the change of people's appreciation angle, few people have been dedicated to inheriting and developing paper cutting and paper carving skills, and traditional folk art is facing the dilemma of extinction.
