This string puppet was introduced to this village by folk artist Li Xiangming who came from Wenling to settle down in 1917. It was mostly performed in coastal rural areas, fishing areas and islands. In 1960, the Xiangshan County String Puppet Troupe was organized, and in 1979, the Gaotang Commune Puppet Troupe was established. After 1982, it was discontinued due to difficulties in inheritance and scarce audiences. The main characteristics of Gaotang string puppets are: first, it is "big": its performance stage is 10 meters long, 45 meters high and 8 meters wide. The whole stage consists of two layers, with five people performing string puppets on the upper layer and two people performing glove puppets on the lower layer. Together with the band and various assistants, it requires about 20 performers and staff in total; second, it is "complete": there are 6 large costume and prop boxes, with scenery such as mountains, seas, nights, palaces and temples, musical instruments of the band and puppet images of various plays; third, it is "real": the stage is wide and the field is deep, and the audience has a strong sense of hierarchy and reality, giving people an immersive feeling; fourth, it is "high": the requirements for performers are high. The puppet's head, mouth, eyes, hands and feet can move, so the performer's ten fingers and body movements must be very skilled, and when cooperating with other performers, it must be seamless; fifth, it is "vulgar": that is, it is mostly performed at various weddings, funerals, temple fairs, etc., serving and appreciating the general public. The main repertoires of the performances include traditional or modern plays such as "Journey to the West", "Conquest of Southern Tang", "Tianbaotu", "Splitting the Mountain to Save Mother", "Blood Handprint", "Cock Crows at Midnight", etc. However, due to the serious damage of the original puppet show, it is currently impossible to perform except for five or six surviving inheritors. Now the village and relevant higher-level departments are working together to take measures to strive for the "revival" of the puppet show as soon as possible.
