Jianshui Lantern
Yunnan Lantern Festival is a local opera of the Han nationality that was formed and developed by combining the folk songs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties with the folk music, songs and dances, and dialect tones of Yunnan. Due to the coexistence of various ethnic groups in Yunnan, the characteristics of Yunnan Lantern Festival have been formed in many branches. The Yi Lantern Festival represented by Baiyun Village, Chake Township, Jianshui County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, Tawa, Puxiong Township, and Yangjie, Nanzhuang, is a distinctive branch of Yunnan Lantern Festival. Since the first lantern festival was held in Baiyun in the 19th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1893), it has been passed down for five generations. The singing of local lanterns has a history of more than 100 years. During the long-term development process, the Yi lanterns in Jianshui County have incorporated many elements of Yi music, dance, language and costumes. They have their own characteristics in scripts, music, and recitation. The five-character sentences and Yi modal particles commonly used in the vernacular part of the four major Yi tunes appear repeatedly in the lyrics of Yi lanterns. The dance part incorporates the movement characteristics of Yi folk dance, and the accompaniment adds the Yi characteristic musical instrument four-string, which greatly enriches the Yi style of Jianshui lanterns and forms a unique branch of Yunnan lanterns. The traditional repertoires of Jianshui lanterns include "Playing Flower Drums", "Fishing", "Playing Grass Pole", "Repairing Cylinders", "Jade Fishing Bottle", "Overlord Going Down the Mountain", "Zhang San Killing Sheep", "Persuading Gambling", "Rioting in the Countryside", "Old Jia Divorces His Wife", "Han Xiangzi Crosses His Wife", and more than 30 other plays. From 1956 to 1982, it has successively provided a lot of music, scripts and other materials to relevant cultural units of the province, state and county, and participated in provincial art performances, winning praise from all sides. Jianshui lanterns are popular in the local area. For example, the Yi lantern troupe in Baiyun Village currently has 60 actors and performers, ranging in age from 14 to 73. Every year on the 15th day of the first lunar month, the lantern troupe in Baiyun Village holds a grand ceremony to invite the lantern god. After that, they burn incense every morning and evening. On the 15th and 16th day of the first lunar month, the whole village starts singing lanterns. After singing lanterns on the 17th day of the first lunar month, the lantern god is sent away.
