Traditional pottery making skills of the Dai people in Honghe County The production of Dai earthenware in Honghe County is spread in Bahao Village, Yisa Town, Honghe County, Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture. The pottery making tools are composed of wooden pottery paddles, patterned plates "Laimo", round stones "Heng", wooden boards "Damo", wooden hammers "Huoheng", pot bottom plates "Bian", etc. The raw materials are local gray clay. Generally, it goes through several processes such as taking soil, drying soil, crushing soil, screening soil, mixing mud, making blanks, drying, and firing. The main varieties produced are earthenware pots, water tanks, medicine jars, earthen basins, teapots, etc. The inheritance of Honghe Dai earthenware is all inherited within the family, and it is passed down to women instead of men, so the production of earthenware is all done by women. In the past, every Dai household in Bahao Village would make earthenware, which was one of the main sources of income for the family. In recent years, with the development of modern social economy, fewer and fewer people are making pottery. Now there is only one old woman in the village, Dao Yuhua, who is over 70 years old, who masters the pottery-making skills. She can make more than 10 kinds of earthenware vessels, including large, medium and small earthen pots, water tanks, medicine jars, etc.
