Traditional pottery making skills of the Dai people in Mangshi The earthenware making skills of the Dai people in Luxi are spread in Mangxiang Village, Mangbang Village, Xuangang Township, Luxi City, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture. The tools for making pottery include a turntable "buried board", a wooden pottery paddle "flat wave", a cobblestone "maxing", a mallet, a wooden board, cowhide or bamboo mats, etc. The raw materials are local black clay. Generally, it goes through several processes such as taking soil, adding sand and mud, making blanks, drying, and firing. The main varieties are earthen pots, pottery jars, steamers, teapots, etc. The earthenware making skills of the Dai people in Luxi are passed down from women to men, and are all made by women. Earthenware has always been one of the sources of income for the local Dai people. In the 1960s and 1970s, pottery making was very popular in the village. More than half of the families in the village made pottery. In addition to using it themselves, they also sold it to the Mangshi area. At present, only two elderly people in their 80s have mastered the pottery making skills, but they are old and have stopped making pottery in recent years.
