Jiangcun Dragon Boat Race is a folk activity organized by residents of Jiangcun Street, Xihu District, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, on the Dragon Boat Festival. Since the Ming Dynasty, the custom of dragon boat racing in Jiangcun has never been interrupted for hundreds of years. Even during the "Cultural Revolution", villagers in various villages secretly organized this folk activity on the Dragon Boat Festival. It is said that when Emperor Qianlong went to the south of the Yangtze River, he saw that dragon boat racing was as lively as going to the festival in Jiangcun, so he granted the title of "Dragon Boat Race". Since then, the title of "Dragon Boat Race" in Jiangcun has been used to this day and has spread to surrounding towns such as Wuchang, Gudang, and Yile. The origin of Jiangcun Dragon Boat Race is related to floods. Starting from the 24th day of the fourth lunar month every year to the small Dragon Boat Festival on the 13th day of the fifth lunar month, the villagers spontaneously invite the Dragon King, offer sacrifices to the Dragon King, thank the Dragon King, and drink dragon boat wine in the village, asking the Dragon King not to cause floods. The climax is on the Dragon Boat Festival, when every family wraps and eats rice dumplings; hangs wormwood, calamus, peach branches, garlic, and gray rice dumplings (good seeds) in front of every door; eats "five yellows", namely wine, yellow croaker, cucumber, yellow eel, and egg yolks in salted duck eggs; hangs sachets; the newly married daughter's family prepares rice dumplings, towels, fans, etc. to send to the man's family on this day, and distributes the items to relatives and friends, commonly known as "Zanjie". Jiangcun Dragon Boat Festival focuses on the performance and entertainment of dragon boats. Every year on the Dragon Boat Festival, one or two hundred dragon boats gather in the "Shengyang" of Shentankouyang in Xixi Wetland. "Shengyang" has a prescribed route. Each dragon boat must first row around Shentankouyang, and finally make a 360-degree rotation in the middle of Shentankouyang (commonly known as "Zai Niba"). After the Dragon Boat Festival, the villagers gather together in villages to eat dragon boat wine. There is a saying in Jiangcun that "Dragon Boat Festival is as important as the Spring Festival", "Dragon Boat Racing is good for a good harvest, and Dragon Boat Watching is auspicious for safety". This traditional folk activity that seeks harmony, joy, and gathers people's hearts is held year after year, and it is better year by year. Therefore, Jiangcun Street was named "China's Folk Culture and Art Hometown (Dragon Boat)" by the Ministry of Culture in 2008.
