Dragon Boat Festival (Jiaxing Dragon Boat Festival Customs)
The Dragon Boat Festival in Jiaxing is an important folk activity of traditional festivals. It originated from commemorating Wu Zixu, a famous general in my country in the late Spring and Autumn Period. The people of Jiaxing have a saying that "May 5th is the time to welcome Wu Jun", so they have to hold activities such as worshipping Wu Zixu. Since the Ming Dynasty, local chronicles have continued to record it. The festival is grand and the customs are diverse, forming the unique characteristics of the Dragon Boat Festival in Jiaxing. The main activities include: a grand scale of Wu Zixu worship; dragon boat races and speedboat races on Nanhu Lake; in addition to wrapping zongzi, there are also folk customs such as hanging calamus and mugwort leaves, burning and smoking atractylodes and angelica, wearing sachets, eating "five yellows" (cucumbers, yellow croakers, yellow eels, yellow mud eggs, i.e. salted duck eggs, - wine), eating "five whites" (white dried meat, white turtles, cabbage, white-cut meat, white-cut chicken), and eating stewed eggs. Its unique traditional festival activities in the Jiangnan water town inherit the long-standing folk Dragon Boat Festival customs and traditions in the Taihu Lake Basin, and have important historical and folklore values.
