Zhang Xiaoquan scissors forging technique
In the second year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1663), Zhang Xiaoquan scissors were first created in Hangzhou, and later became one of the famous "Five Hang" products. Traditional civilian scissors are Zhang Xiaoquan's original products. There are five types of scissors: "Xinhua, Shanlang, Wuhu, Round Head, and Long Head". They dominate the scissor industry with ten major features: uniform steel inlay, clear steel and iron, fine grinding, sharp blade, firm pins, smooth opening and closing, exquisite style, novel engraving, durable, good quality and low price. Zhang Xiaoquan's traditional scissor making has a total of 72 processes, of which two exquisite and unique production techniques have been passed down through trials and tribulations. One is the steel inlay forging technique. The scissors use the fine steel from Longquan and Yunhe in Zhejiang Province to inlay on wrought iron. After thousands of hammers and tempers, they are made into scissor blades and ground with Zhenjiang mud bricks. The second is the hand-carved pattern on the surface of the scissors. The scissor craftsmen carve patterns of West Lake landscapes, birds and animals on the surface of the scissors, which are lifelike, perfect and exquisite. Zhang Xiaoquan, the founder of Zhang Xiaoquan scissors, once set a family motto of "fine steel and fine workmanship". For more than 340 years, his descendants have practiced it and it has become the core concept of Zhang Xiaoquan's corporate culture. The business purpose of Zhang Xiaoquan Scissors Factory, "quality first, honesty first" and the spirit of "doing everything with heart" originated from this. Zhang Xiaoquan scissors were once used by the imperial court of the Qing Dynasty. Because Emperor Qianlong specially awarded them a seal and became a "time-honored brand" in China. It is not only widely praised in China, but also famous in the world. In 1910, Zhang Xiaoquan scissors won the silver medal at the Nanyang Industrial Exposition, the second prize at the Panama World Expo in 1915, the silver medal at the Philadelphia World Expo in 1926, and the special prize at the West Lake Expo in 1929. In 1956, Mao Zedong pointed out in the article "Accelerating the Socialist Transformation of Handicrafts": "I would like to remind you that many good things in handicrafts should not be destroyed. Wang Mazi and Zhang Xiaoquan's knives and scissors should not be destroyed even for 10,000 years. The good things of our nation that have been destroyed must be restored, and they must be made better." However, with the development of the times, the application of modern stamping and injection molding technology has greatly impacted the traditional scissors forging skills, resulting in a break in the inheritance of this ancient handicraft. Today, there are no scissors masters who can complete all the processes from beginning to end. The Zhang Xiaoquan scissors forging technology urgently needs to be rescued and restored.
