Scissors are a necessity for people's production and life during the agricultural society. The Houshan scissors-making technique was born in Houshan Village, Dingjiaqiao Town, Jing County. Through material selection, steel pressing, forging, quenching and other processes, the original iron is forged into scissors to serve the people in the agricultural society and the rice paper making technique, forming a handicraft with strong local characteristics, rich scientific and technological genes, and combined with multiple cultures. Houshan scissors first originated in the late Song Dynasty. It survived with the emergence of paper-cutting in the rice paper technique. During this period, square-mouthed heavy scissors were mainly used, and then ordinary scissors with thin mouths and pointed heads appeared. During the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty, it developed into two categories of rice paper scissors and civilian scissors with dozens of varieties. The production of scissors for various purposes is mainly concentrated in Houshan Village, Dingjiaqiao Town, Jing County, and it got its name from this. At the peak of production, more than 2 million civilian scissors were produced annually. It is a famous brand product in Jingxian County, second only to Xuan paper and Xuan brushes. Its production skills are kept secret. The production method is dominated by traditional hand-made skills. After more than 20 processes, the product is completed. It has been inherited and developed from generation to generation, forming its unique style. Its traditional skills have distinct regional characteristics. The products are simple and natural, with a wide variety. The selection of materials, pressing steel, forging, and quenching have their own strictness and uniqueness, which is different from other scissors. Houshan scissors are divided into two categories with dozens of varieties. Among them, the more typical one is the Xuan paper scissors, which are characterized by large square heads, heavy and sharp. They are mainly used for cutting paper after paper inspection in the Xuan paper making technique. They are known as the "No. 1 scissors in the world"; the other type is civilian scissors, which have thin mouths, sharp heads and grooves, tough and sharp steel, can cut iron when hard, cut cotton when soft, easy to repair and grind, durable, etc. They are widely used in farming, clothing, and women's needlework, and are one of the indispensable tools for people's production and life.
