Double Land Boat Dance

Henan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

In the performance sequence of traditional Han folk dance teams, land boat dance is usually performed by a single person, that is, there is only one person on the boat (excluding the boatman under the boat), and a woman sitting in the boat supports the entire boat in the middle of the boat. The inventor of the double land boat felt that the boatman (boatman) did not sit in the boat during the performance, so it was not perfect. The structure of the single land boat also did not allow the boatman (boatman) to sit, which would cause the boatman to lean forward and backward and make the performance unbalanced. After the single land boat was modified, the boat body was lengthened and designed to be supported by two women sitting in the front and back. The two boatmen (the first and second boatmen) were dressed up as Sean and his daughter in the drama "Sean Goes Fishing". Various dance steps such as sitting in the boat, kneeling, squatting, small steps, rubbing steps, slow steps, etc., as well as some commonly used techniques in traditional folk dances, formed a unique double land boat dance. The performance of the double land boat dance is mainly based on simulation, which exaggerates the life of various boats on the ground to achieve a reproducible artistic performance effect that combines the real and the virtual. Such as pulling anchor, lifting the boat, pumping water, backwater, shaking the waves, stranding, lying on the boat, turning over, crossing the boat, anchoring, etc. This project is the original creation of the people of Nanjie Village, which has not been seen in other places in my country. It condenses the folk dance style of Henan local color, which is lively, interesting and beautiful. The origin and inheritance of the double land boat dance The double land boat dance originated in the late Qing Dynasty and has been passed down for five generations. It has a history of more than 100 years. The double land boat dance has a detailed and clear inheritance pedigree. There is folk evidence that the founder adapted the double land boat dance based on the development of the single land boat dance, and there are records of historical performances and contemporary inheritors. The double land boat dance in Nanjie Village tells the story of the hardships and happiness of a fisherman's life in the language of dance. The performance is both civil and martial, and it is appreciated by both the refined and the popular. It is full of life interest and has a strong local color. Its inheritance method is oral transmission from artist to artist. There is no fixed master-apprentice relationship, nor is there a mandatory teaching relationship. It all depends on the interests of the scholars. Double land boat dance is rare in Chinese folk dance and has considerable academic, ornamental and historical value. The folk double land boat dance of Nanjie Village has always been passed down from artist to artist. There is no fixed master-apprentice relationship, nor is there a mandatory teaching method. Learners rely entirely on their personal hobbies and interests. However, some outstanding representatives have appeared in the performance activities of folk dances in Nanjie Village in different historical periods, forming a custom of inheritance from generation to generation. According to research, the founder of the double land boat dance is Liu Sheng from Nanjie Village. The second generation is Song Jinfu, Zhao Falai, and "Dog Dai Wang" (nickname). The third generation is Chen Sancheng, Chen Facheng, Li Shuichang, and Guo Longan. The fourth generation is Ba Liugen, Xing Xiaolai, Zhang Qingwang, and Shui Changfa. The fifth generation is Yang Yueting, Zhu Qiuzhen, Qi Haikun, and Wang Mao. The third-generation inheritor of the double land boat dance, Mr. Guo Longan, who is over 80 years old and still alive today, is a historical witness to the development of the double land boat dance in Nanjie Village. He started learning the double land boat dance when he was 18 or 19 years old, and has always played the role of the boat girl in the front cabin. According to Mr. Guo Longan, the double land boat dance in Nanjie Village not only has a deep historical origin, but also has a great social influence. Before liberation, he had gone out of his home and was invited to perform in Luohe, Zhoukou, Jieshou and other places. Because of his reputation, the phenomenon of "letting the meeting" often occurs during performances. In 1957, he won the first prize in the provincial folk art competition in Zhengzhou. The Soviet cultural experts who attended the performance liked the show very much and gave high praise on the spot. After the performance, they enthusiastically took photos with the performers. Mr. Chen Jinxiang, who is 18 years old this year, said that his father Chen Facheng, his uncle Chen Tucheng, and his second uncle Chen Sancheng are all fans of the third-generation double land boat dance. His uncle Chen Tucheng mainly plays the erhu, and his second uncle Chen Sancheng and his father Chen Facheng mainly play the "boat girl". During the Republic of China period, the Chen Facheng brothers lived in Shoupa Lane in Linying County and opened a hot and spicy soup restaurant at the crossroads. Because the soup was well made, it was called "Chen's One Pot Soup". Since the brothers all liked the double land boat dance, they specially made a double land boat, bought role costumes and gongs and drums, and performed a double land boat dance almost every night after the restaurant closed, attracting many people to watch. It was called "Chen's One Pot Soup Drama" and was very famous in the surrounding areas; during the New Year, it was performed everywhere and was very popular. In 1949, the People's Liberation Army passed through Linying County on its way south. The Chen brothers specially performed a double land boat dance on the large playground in the city to welcome the People's Liberation Army. A military reporter named Chen Yi took photos and made a text report, which was later included in a book called "Attack". Before "0", Chen Jinxiang had seen this book. According to Tang Songling, who once worked at the Linying County Cultural Center, the County Cultural Center did collect this book, and the book did contain a story about the Chen Facheng brothers, villagers from Nanjie Village in Linying County, performing a double land boat dance to welcome the People's Liberation Army. Unfortunately, the book was lost in "0". Elder Chen Jinxiang played the role of a matchmaker in the double land boat dance performance that day, and it can be seen that he loves this dance. Chen Jinxiang also talked about the unfortunate experience of his father Chen Facheng: During "0", Chen Facheng could not stand the unfair criticism and struggle, so he quietly left Nanjie Village alone one night. He has no news since he left. Now it has been years, and I don't know if the old man is still alive. Chen Jinxiang has participated in the village's double land boat dance performance since the late 1970s. Like his father's generation, he is very popular. Even now he himself does not know how many performances he has performed. The artistic characteristics and value of the double land boat dance are commented by experts. The double land boat dance has a strong breath of life, unique freshness and spirituality, rigorous dance, rich drama, appreciation by both the refined and the popular, sincere feelings, clear theme and other artistic characteristics. It can be seen that it is not accidental that the dance is included in the list of intangible cultural heritage of Henan Province. The movements of the double land boat dance are mostly stage movements of drama. The "first pole" and "second pole" imitate the rowing movements of Xiao En and Xiao Guiying in "Fishing and Killing the Family". They imitate the movements of real boats in various situations in the water, including pulling anchor, lifting the boat, pumping water, returning water, surfing, lying on the boat, turning over, crossing the boat, etc., telling the story of the hardships and happiness of a fisherman's life in the language of dance. Therefore, it has a strong breath of life. The double land boat dance is the original creation of the people of Nanjie Village. There is no other place in my country. Even if there is, it is inherited from Nanjie. The double land boat dance condenses the local folk dance form of Henan. It is vivid, full of life interest, fresh and beautiful. The double land boat dance is accompanied by local operas during the performance, such as Sean Fishing and some local opera clips, which vividly express the connotation of the dance. The double land boat comes from the folk and flourishes among the folk. Since its appearance, both dignitaries and ordinary people can get what they need from it. The reason why it can be passed down to this day shows that it has a strong vitality. The scenes expressed in each of its plots are sincere, honest and real. It moves people with emotions, blends scenes, and runs the plot through the entire dance. The double land boat expresses a complete theme and a complete story with a distinct theme through dance. In addition, when performing the double land boat dance, the dance is closely coordinated with percussion, making the dance more dramatic. Some famous folk art experts in the province believe that the double land boat has a great influence in Henan and has important value. It is deeply hidden in Henan folk culture, and its main value is reflected in three aspects: academic value, practical value and historical value. The double land boat dance is a representative of Chinese folk dance, with a profound dramatic background and a broad mass base. It has a rigorous structure and is a dramatic folk dance. It is very distinctive in the treasure house of Chinese folk dances. Its rich content and dance characteristics are rare in Chinese folk dances. Therefore, it has high academic value. Experts believe that protecting the double land boat dance will play an important role in promoting the spiritual civilization construction of Luohe and the whole country, enriching the cultural life of the people, and building a socialist harmonious society. Therefore, it has high practical value. Since the double land boat dance evolved from the single land boat dance, it is one of the representative schools of Chinese folk dance and therefore has important historical value. The current situation of the double land boat dance In view of the artistic characteristics and value of the double land boat dance in Nanjie Village, the cultural department of Linying County has carried out a lot of excavation and sorting work since the 1980s. However, some old artists who perform the double land boat dance are old and weak, and some have passed away, and there are not many young people learning this dance, most of the dance stunts have been lost, and no one has performed difficult movements, and no one has succeeded. Therefore, this treasure of folk art urgently needs to be protected, rescued and inherited and developed. It is understood that in 2011, the Linying County Cultural Bureau submitted a report to the county government, requesting the excavation, arrangement and protection of folk dances in Nanjie Village. That year, Nanjie Village established a leading group for the rescue, excavation and protection of folk dances in Nanjie Village, with Zhao Xi, the village branch secretary, as the group leader. Today, the Linying County Cultural Bureau has formulated a folk dance protection plan for Nanjie Village, protecting the double land boat dance from three aspects: first, further carry out in-depth surveys to fully grasp the relevant information of folk dances in Nanjie Village; second, systematically excavate, organize and study folk dances in Nanjie Village, so that folk dances in Nanjie Village can be effectively protected.
