The Nanzhuang Village Puppet Theater is located in Taoying Township, Ruyang County. It is connected to Ruzhou City, Pingdingshan in the east, Yichuan and Song County in the west, Ruyang County in the south, and Longmen Grottoes in the north. It is located at the intersection of two roads running east-west and north-south. It can be said that the terrain is flat, the transportation is convenient, the population is dense, the logistics are prosperous, and the people's cultural life is relatively rich. Although puppetry here is a "small toy" with eight or nine actors, less than 30 sticks, and the fixed assets of the entire theater are only more than 10,000 yuan, it is unique in this area of hundreds of miles. Her performance form is novel and unique, and she is highly technical, so she is very popular among the masses, especially among children and the elderly. Nanzhuang puppetry is called "elbow puppetry" in the local dialect, and it is a component of the rod puppet in my country's puppet opera. Tracing back to the origin, it should be a relic of the prosperous period of the Qing Dynasty rod puppets that were spread all over the junction of Shanxi, Shaanxi and Henan provinces. According to local veteran artist Li Longtao, Nanzhuang Puppet Theatre was founded in the late 19th century. At that time, puppet performances were the same as "playing the stage" (i.e. stage performances of operas). The roles of "sheng, dan, jing, mo, chou" were clearly divided, and the theatre still maintains this division of roles. Currently, there are nine actors in the theatre, the oldest of whom is 77 years old, the youngest 55 years old, and the average age is 66.67 years old. Due to the lack of successors, the theatre has reached the point of being lost and dying, and urgently needs to be rescued, protected and passed on.
