Yongqing was under the jurisdiction of the State of Yan in ancient times. It was not until the Han Dynasty that people began to live there. It was designated as Tongze County in the Sui Dynasty and was called Yongqing in the first year of Tianbao. Jianguzhuang Village, which is famous for its duck-paste lanterns, is a natural village located in the southeast of Yongqing. It is under the jurisdiction of Houyi Town. It is 3.5 kilometers south of Houyi Town. The village is rectangular with the main street running east-west. There are more than 100 households of villagers, most of whom are surnamed Zhang, Liu, and Yang. The customary handicrafts such as duck-paste lanterns and melon lanterns have a history of more than 300 years in Yongqing. It was widely circulated in the early years. In the past forty years, dozens of households in Jianguzhuang Village have been famous for specializing in this craft. According to historical records, since the end of the Ming Dynasty, the marriages of young men and women in Yongqing were held in the twelfth lunar month. After the marriage, the girl's parents would buy a hand-paste duck lantern for their daughter and son-in-law, and put it on the bedside to show the meaning of "pressing the child" (or "pressing the child"), hoping to have a big fat boy next year. Later, this custom gradually evolved into the twelfth month of the first, second, and third year after the birth of a child, when the female parents would buy duck lanterns, melon lanterns, and small car lanterns for their grandsons (or granddaughters). This custom has formed a well-known local saying, called "Ducks in the first year, melons in the second year, and small cars in the third year". This custom of buying lanterns for grandsons (or granddaughters) has continued to this day in the local area. The characteristics of Yongqing lanterns are: 1. The raw materials are taken from life; 2. The frames are all made of geometric shapes; 3. Strong imitation; 4. The color combination is harmonious and has a festive atmosphere. 5. The details are hand-painted. In recent years, with the development of the market economy, a large number of plastic crafts such as duck lanterns and melon lanterns produced by molds have appeared. Because of the low cost and high efficiency of machine production, it has a huge market impact on the artists of such hand-pasted artworks, and some artists have abandoned it and sought other ways. In addition, the fast-paced life makes some artists not interested in studying skills and seeking production quantity. In the long run, this skill will die out.
