Lahu people swing dance
The waving dance is a collective dance passed down from generation to generation by the Lahu people in Lancang Lahu Autonomous County, Simao City. It is very distinctive and is not restricted by time, place, or number of people. As long as they are happy, they will gather to dance. It is especially popular during festivals, weddings, and funerals, and is deeply loved by the masses. The waving dance is mainly performed by women, with elephant foot drums, cymbals, and other instruments as the main accompaniment. The leader dances while playing the instruments, and the crowd dances in a circle hand in hand or in a line. There are generally two forms of performance: one is the footwork type, which emphasizes the movements of the feet and the steps of stepping, kicking, stomping, swinging, swiping, and small jumps. The body movements are both warm and flexible; the other is the waving dance, which is mainly based on the up and down swinging of the arms and shoulders, imitating various production and life movements, and the small pad steps are combined with the swinging of the hands to form a rhythm of swinging shoulders and the whole body extending upward and undulating, which makes people indulge in happiness and joy. There are 86 routines of waving dance, which are mainly taught by the fathers, and the young people are influenced by them and passed down from generation to generation. The Lahu dance of Lancang has participated in many large-scale art performances organized by the province, city and county, and has been well received. In addition to being popular in rural areas, the dance has also become one of the favorite ways for people to relax, exercise and communicate in towns. It is common to see people dancing in circles in the square. However, in the process of the evolution of the dance, many traditional dance movements have changed. At present, the local government has proposed some protection measures, organized forces to train a group of artistic backbones of the dance, and recorded and organized dance movements and music, which has played a positive role in promoting the inheritance of the dance.
