🎧  Listen to Introduction

Gu'an County, Hebei Province, is located in the hinterland of the Beijing-Tianjin-Baoding triangle, in the Greater Beijing Economic Development Circle, and is one of the key cities and counties in Hebei Province to implement the "Two Rings (Beijing-Tianjin Ring, Bohai Ring)" strategy. The territory is rich in natural resources. Since the Yuan Dynasty established its capital in Beijing, Gu'an has always been located in the capital's suburbs, so it has convenient transportation and developed culture. It was known as "the foot of the emperor" and "the first city in the south of Beijing" in ancient times. The famous Qujiaying music was bred and prospered on this land. The Qujiaying Concert was first established during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. There are 13 sets of songs such as "Yu Furong", "Zhou Juntang", and "Ma Yulang", "Golden Scripture", "Tao Junling" and other big board songs, "Five Saints Buddha", "He Sanbao" and more than 20 small songs and a set of percussion instruments. Among the instruments used, an 8-hole white jade pipe decorated with silver is rare in the world and is called "筚篥" in Tang and Song Dynasty classics. Qujiaying music is another national cultural treasure discovered after the ancient music of Xi'an and the music of Zhihua Temple in Beijing. The musical instrument shape, music scores, repertoire, and performance etiquette are all in line with the music of the upper class in the Yuan, Ming, and even Tang and Song dynasties, which has long been lost among the people in most parts of the country. The Qujiaying concert has a rich repertoire, complete music scores, superb musicians, and a strict inheritance method. It has been preserved in a relatively closed state and has the characteristics of "originality". The instruments, music scores, repertoires and practical activities used in the concert provide a comprehensive data on the technical specifications and palace tuning system of ancient Chinese music art. The music technology theory terms used by folk artists will help to solve many difficult problems in the history of Chinese music theory. Since 1984, the Qujiaying concert has attracted the attention of the music industry and all walks of life. The China Academy of Arts regularly sends experts to provide guidance and support, and held the "First National Conference on the Art of Drum and Wind Music" in Gu'an; in 1987, it went to Beijing to participate in the Asia-Pacific Music Academic Symposium held by UNESCO. More than 100 experts from more than 20 countries watched the performance and gave high praise. The development of ancient music has been restricted by the fact that it is only passed down orally by the master, the musicians lack modern music theory knowledge, and the musicians do not pass on their skills to others. The old musicians have gradually passed away, and the two old men who can teach ancient music are both 80 years old. None of the other musicians in the village can play the big suite, and ancient music is facing the possibility of being lost.
