Yujiang Woodcarving (the fourth batch of provincial level) Yujiang County is located in the northeast of Jiangxi Province, in the middle and lower reaches of the Xinjiang River. It borders Yuehu and Guixi in the east, Jinxi in the south, Dongxiang in the west, and Wannian and Yugan in the north. Guoxi woodcarving is mainly distributed in Dengbu Town, Jinjiang Town, Zhongtong Town, Honghu Township, Maquan Town and other places. Yujiang's woodcarving craft has a long history. There is historical evidence that it was brought in with the northern immigrants in the Han and Tang Dynasties, and it flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Yujiang woodcarving was mostly used for beams, brackets, eaves, railings, door lintels, plaques, etc.; the forms of expression tended to be diverse, including relief, round carving, openwork, etc.; the themes included people, animals, still life, etc. From the late Qing Dynasty to before liberation, woodcarving was widely used in house decoration, handicrafts, and Buddhist supplies; the themes of woodcarving were diverse, and they were often seen in life customs, myths and legends, folk tales, auspicious meanings, etc. By the 1970s, Zhang Guoxi, a famous Chinese entrepreneur and executive director of the China Arts and Crafts Association, founded the first craft carving factory in Yujiang's history. He successfully combined Yujiang's traditional wood carving with a variety of domestic carving techniques, vigorously cultivated young carving technicians, and started from the production of carved camphorwood boxes. It gradually developed into more than 2,000 varieties in five categories, including traditional handicrafts, carved furniture, interior decoration, architectural decoration, and high-end religious products. It was exported to dozens of countries and regions such as Southeast Asia, North America, Western Europe and Hong Kong, and was praised by foreign merchants as "the world's first carving". Guoxi's wood carving techniques are mainly relief, combined with hollow carving, openwork carving, round carving and other techniques. The main themes of carving are myths and legends, historical stories, flowers, birds, fish and insects, birds and beasts, dragons, phoenixes and unicorns. The wood used is mostly camphor wood, basswood, boxwood, cypress, beech, sandalwood, mahogany, etc. The wood carvings are vivid, the techniques are exquisite, the ideas are ingenious, the lacquer art is exquisite, and the beauty is breathtaking. Guoxi woodcarving combines the essence of Yujiang traditional woodcarving and domestic traditional schools, forming a unique carving technique and expression method, using form to express spirit and woodcarving as a carrier to spread the traditional skills of the Chinese nation. The promotion, inheritance and innovation make Guoxi woodcarving stand out among Chinese carving schools.
