Tonggu Earthen Papermaking Technique (Municipal Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Project) Tonggu County is located in the northern mid-subtropical humid climate zone, with mild climate, abundant rainfall, short frost period, and distinct four seasons. Due to its high terrain and large forest area, the temperature is 12 degrees Celsius lower than that of neighboring counties. The whole county is full of mountains and bamboo forests. Tonggu has made full use of the fine fiber characteristics of mountain bamboo to process and make earthen paper since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. After felling the bamboo, the bamboo strips are split, soaked in water, pulped, filtered, finely pulped, and made into paper. In the pulping process, primitive hammering methods such as stone troughs and stone mortars and waterwheel power are often used.
