Dingnan Folk Tales--The Story of Xiawei in Zhuyuan, Old City
The "Zhuyuanxia Hakka Enclosed House" located in the northeast corner of Liantangcheng, Laocheng Town, was built in 1918 and has a history of nearly 100 years. It was built by Mr. Liao Fengyu of the local Liao family and his nephew, the wealthy businessman Liao Wenyuan, with shares. Before the construction, all the Liao clan members lived in the old town of Xiawo Village. Due to the rapid increase in their descendants, they decided to build a new enclosed house to solve the urgent problem of crowded housing and external defense against bandits. This enclosure is 46.6 meters wide and 39.9 meters deep, covering an area of 1,859 square meters. The enclosed house is in the shape of a "囬" character, with three buildings, four vertical and four gun towers, two entrances, three halls and six wells, the outer wall is made of polished gray bricks and hard mountain tops, and the inner house is surrounded by earth rammed and suspended mountain tops. There is a flower building (actually: private school genealogy bureau) built on the left and back of the enclosure. It is an enclosed house that integrates the functions of home, fort, ancestral hall, gate, private school, and genealogy bureau. In 2009, it was listed as the first batch of cultural relics protection units of Hakka enclosed houses in our county. Legend has it that at that time, Liao Xingnan, the third son of Liao Fengyu, happened to be working in Ganzhou. He drafted a petition for Mr. Dong in Ganzhou and won the lawsuit. In return, Dong drew a blueprint of the enclosure and gave it to him. After three or four years of planning and preparation, twelve geomancers were invited to use the compass to select the location. It was determined that the foot of Zhuyuangang was an auspicious place for the foundation, and the compass of Master Huang Guilin was used as the standard, that is, facing south and taking the Qianshan and Hai directions. In those days, Liao Fengyu, who was born as a tribute student, served as the head of the school affairs section of the county government, while Liao Wenyuan was just a wealthy businessman. The social status of both of them was relatively low, and the scale of the building was restricted by the feudal system and could not exceed the county government. Therefore, they had to go to Ganzhou again to ask Mr. Dong to reduce the blueprint and limit the construction to seven halls, six wells and four gun towers. In 1921, Liao Fengyu died suddenly of illness while the construction was in full swing, making the original plan impossible to realize. When it was completed, only the existing six halls, five wells and three turrets were actually completed, and one hall, one well and one turret were not completed. In addition, a flower tower was built, and the total area of the enclosure was 1,859 square meters. It is also said that the Zhuyuanxia enclosure is located in a place with outstanding people and the people of the county praised it highly. Fengshui scholars from inside and outside the province often came to visit it. For many years, people have said that in the past, a Feng Shui master named Yang once traveled here to observe the shape of the mountain and search for dragon veins. He saw dense bamboo forests on Zhuyuangang, which were as green as a bucket, extending to both sides like two jade ribbons floating over dozens of lotus ponds in Yapodi, singing and dancing, reflecting the clear water in the pond like a mirror, the lotus seeds and dewdrops dazzling, and a spiritual light and righteousness rising to the sky. He immediately judged that this was a blessed land for a yang house, and immediately wrote down a note: The foot of Zhuyuangang is in the shape of "lotus leaves covering a turtle". If you build a yang house, there will be many talented people who will work hard and plant seeds. After the walled house was built, many celebrities explained in their seals: with Lei Gong Ji as the support at the back, the ups and downs of the dragon and the development are natural and stable, which will surely bring longevity; then looking forward, the Snow Mountain and Baimian Mountain in Guangdong dozens of miles away and the Tiancheng Four Desks and Pen Holders in Ma'anshan nearby, sometimes with rolling clouds and sometimes with misty clouds in the four seasons, rain or shine, ever-changing, showing its grandeur and magnificence; then looking at the Xun Pagoda built in Ma'anshan nearby, it towers into the sky, just like the Kui Pen, one of the Four Treasures of the Study, and in front of the Kui Pen is a sailboat-shaped lotus pond, just like a dragon and phoenix jade inkstone and a plate of ink placed on the desk, which undoubtedly means that there will be many literary talents; the Azure Dragon and the White Tiger on both sides of the walled house respond to each other from a distance, and everything will be successful and the people will be prosperous. Look at the "Eastern Zen Moon Shadow" on the left, slowly stretching out the blue dragon flying and purple air coming from the east, its majestic spirit is approaching the people of Jishan; look at the "Western Hua Qingyan" on the right, the Guanyin Pavilion, with great compassion and great mercy saving all living beings, taking the whole mountain shape of the Guanyin Pavilion, it is like a white tiger showing its might and swallowing the mountains and rivers, both cutting off evil and ensuring peace in all seasons. The blue dragon and white tiger hug the hundred acres of fertile land, just like the spirit of a broad mind, and the majestic sense of power, it is really the mouth of a dragon. The legend of people is very magical. It is said: When the foundation was broken in 1918, Master Huang Guilin did not know that the predecessors had made a seal under the bamboo garden to prove it, and Mr. Huang Guilin also had his subjective assertion. He picked up the compass and said to Liao Fengyu and Liao Wenyuan, the owners: I chose the Qianshan and Hai direction. If I am right, there will be a county official in charge within five years, but the county government will have to move. The reason is: the county government office is like a "tiger jumping over the wall", and its terrain is lower than the "lotus leaf covering the turtle" under the bamboo garden, forming a situation where the tiger's head is close to the ground and its four legs are crawling, and the turtle rides on its back and destroys the tiger's power. At that time, the clan members suspected that his wild words were not credible. Coincidentally, in 1922 (the 11th year of the Republic of China), Liao Xingnan of Benweiwu became the county magistrate of Dingnan. In 1926 (the 15th year of the Republic of China), the county magistrate Lai Tianqiu fled to Xiali with the county seal due to the public unrest, and the government office was set on fire. From then on, the county government was located in Xiali and changed to Xincheng, and Gaosha was changed to Laocheng. Afterwards, the clan members suddenly realized that what Master Yang said in the seal was true. In fact, on October 1, 1941, Chiang Ching-kuo published a long article titled "The True Face of Southern Jiangxi" on the day of the founding of the Zhengqi Daily. The article was published for several days in a row, giving examples to disclose the degree of chaos in Southern Jiangxi in the past: "The people of Xiali saw that the Huang and Liao families in the old city were very powerful. Later, the people of Xincheng set a fire when the county magistrate went to the township for inspection and burned down the county government. The county magistrate had no choice but to move the county government from the old city to the new city when he returned." In 1921, before the enclosure was built, Liao Wenyuan and his family moved into the new house from the Wo Village (commonly known as stealing). After the completion of the house in 1923, Liao Fengyu's three sons and their families moved in at the same time. At that time, there were only 4 households with 26 people, which seemed spacious and comfortable. After a hundred years of reproduction and development, the family history has seen a prosperous page: according to statistics, there are more than 260 people in the enclosure, which is 10 times the number of people who moved in that year; among the more than 130 people now, most of them are wage earners, such as professors, engineers, technicians, primary and secondary school teachers, and enterprises and institutions, etc. They are distributed in various fronts inside and outside the province, such as party affairs, administration, commerce, industry and commerce, health, veterinary medicine, culture, education, sports, music, art, photography, surveying and mapping, mining, private enterprises, individuals, etc. Everyone is dedicated to their work and honest, and many members have won the title of advanced workers or model workers at the provincial, municipal and county levels. Even the women's army who work in the production team at home have won the "March 8th Red Flag Advanced Unit" award flag awarded by the All-China Women's Federation. In recent years, the "Cultural Viewpoint" column of Ganzhou TV Station has filmed a group of special programs on Hakka women's embroidery "Bell Hat" with the background of the Zhuyuan Xia Enclosure House. In 2005, Phoenix TV in Hong Kong took the Hakka customs at the source of the Dongjiang River (at the foot of Kuimei Mountain) as the theme and came to Zhuyuanxia Village to film the simulated scene of the lion dance at the New Year. The Propaganda Department of the County Party Committee and the County Cultural Bureau attached great importance to it and dispatched ten lion dances to accompany the County TV station to perform the New Year's performance. The host welcomed them with a yellow dragon ceremony. The sound of firecrackers and gongs and drums resounded through the sky. The scene was very lively, as if the spectacular scene of the past was right in front of us. Although Zhuyuanxia Village is a drop in the ocean among Hakka villages, it has left many philosophical Feng Shui arguments for future generations. Facts have proved that Zhuyuanxia is getting better and better with the development of the times. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.) (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
