The legend of Wawajing is a folk literature project in the first batch of representative projects of municipal intangible cultural heritage in Huai'an. When it comes to Wawajing, almost everyone in Huai'an knows it. It has a physical object. It was once a well for residents to use for domestic water. It is now located in the southeast corner of Laobakou Primary School Kindergarten on Heping Road in the urban area. It once represented a place name, just like the old place names such as "Zhakou" and "Mosque" that the old Huaiyin people are familiar with. Wawajing represents the area of Jilong Lane in Dongchang Street. Wawajing is quite famous, and it has been circulated among the people since ancient times. The legend of Wawajing The folk legend of Wawajing is circulated in Qinghe District. It began in the late Ming Dynasty and has been passed down from generation to generation by word of mouth. According to expert research, there were drum book artists in the Republic of China who passed it on in the form of rap. There are multiple versions of the legend of Wawajing, mainly the following ones. One: There is a Christian church opened by Americans 100 meters west of the well, near Wanzikou (also called Wanzikou), where foreign missionaries live. According to legend, there was a doll made of pure gold hidden in the folk. It was very delicate and cute, and it was worth a fortune. The missionary knew about it. He asked around and found out the specific location. He finally got it and kept it in the secret room of the church, ready to smuggle it back to the country when the opportunity arose. One night, a golden light came out of the secret room and fled to the east. Since then, the golden doll disappeared. Later, it was heard that someone saw the golden doll fall into the well. The missionary hurriedly ordered to go down the well to salvage it. After many days of tossing and turning, there was no result, so he had to give up. Since then, the people nearby sometimes saw golden light in the well and heard the doll's subtle crying. Over time, the well became famous and was called "Doll Well". Second: In the early years, there lived an old couple with no children to the east of the old well. They were kind-hearted, hardworking and simple, and made a living by grinding soy milk and making tofu. At the end of December one year, the old man went to fetch water from the well. As soon as he walked to the well, he heard the faint cry of a child. The old man was very surprised. How could there be a child crying in this night when water would freeze? He walked around the well platform and its vicinity, but still only heard the cry but not the child. He listened carefully and the sound seemed to come from the well. He looked into the well, but it was pitch black and he could not see anything. He shouted but there was no response. The old man said regretfully: "If there really is a child, I will take him back no matter what, even if it means just letting him play the bellows for me or talking to us!" The old man carried water and hurried back. When he arrived at the door of his house and had no time to speak, the old woman hurriedly asked the old man: "Where did you find the child? He said his home is in the well, and the well is his home." The old man was happy. He had just muttered such a regretful sentence at the well, and he really came. The child was laughing sweetly and playing the bellows happily in the house. The old couple were busy with the pots and pans. Before they knew it, the sky was getting light. When they went to see the child, hey, he was gone! After that, the child would come every night, and disappear when the work was done at dawn. So this old well was called "Baby Well". Third: Shili Dongchang Street is a prosperous street in Qingjiangpu. The largest store on the street is Renyuan Pharmacy. The owner of the pharmacy is honest and treats customers with integrity. His business is very prosperous, and he has opened more than a dozen branches in the surrounding towns. In the old Qingjiang era, as long as Renyuan Pharmacy is mentioned, it is really known to everyone. After the Japanese army invaded the Central Plains, it quickly occupied Qingjiang City. At that time, the owner of Renyuan Pharmacy was old. He was worried that the pair of golden dolls, the treasure of the store, which was passed down from his family, would fall into the hands of the Japanese invaders. So on a dark night, he wrapped them with kraft paper layer by layer, and when his family was not paying attention, he quietly walked to an ancient well in Jilong Lane and reluctantly sank the pair of golden dolls into the bottom of the well. This ancient well is the only source of water for the residents of Shili Dongchang Street to live, wash rice and vegetables, and wash clothes. This sweet and pure water source is inexhaustible. It is the water from this well that has nurtured generations of kind and intelligent people in Dongchang Street. Several years later, when the owner of Renyuan Herbal Medicine Store was dying, he trembled and gestured, and said to his family in a slurred and intermittent voice: "Golden doll in the well, golden doll in the well." The old man passed away, and the name of the Doll Well quickly spread in Shili Dongchang Street and even the entire Qingjiang City. Fourth: A long time ago, there lived a kind and lonely old man in Dongchang Street at the old dam mouth of the Qingjiang Dam in Huaiyin. Because there was a clear and sweet well in his home, people called him the old man of the well. One day, the old man of the well passed by the stone pier at the river mouth of the ancient mosque and saw a fisherman catching a golden carp. He loved it very much, so he bought it and took it home to release it in the well. The next day, when Mr. Jing returned home, he was very surprised. He didn't know who had helped him clean the yard. There was delicious food on the table: soft-shelled long fish from Yuhuchun, steamed dumplings from Huaiyuan, stewed cattails from Laobanzhai, and half a cup of Yanghe wine. Strange things happened for three consecutive days, and Mr. Jing was puzzled. On the fourth day, Mr. Jing deliberately went out early, and then sneaked back home through the back door and hid. At noon, there was a slight sound in the well, and a baby with big eyes, white face, and wearing a big red bellyband jumped out, walked into the house and got busy. Mr. Jing hugged the child and asked him to find out that it was a carp that was grateful and repaying. The old man kept the child and named him Jinwa. The two of them depended on each other and lived happily. In the early spring of the next year, a black gas blew with the southeast wind, and many people in the neighborhood got plague. The good doctors in the city could not treat them. Everyone went to the Qinglong Temple to pray to Buddha, and learned that it was the big mouth snake demon in the southeast puddle that was causing trouble. Jinwa was determined to get rid of the harm for the people. He came to the big mouth and saw a thick fog and a bent rotten wood floating in the water. Jinwa saw through the magic of the snake demon and threw a dart to nail the rotten wood to the bottom of the water. The snake demon was in unbearable pain and showed its true form. It opened its bloody mouth and pounced on Jinwa, but its tail was nailed by the magic dart and it could not break free. Jinwa raised his hand and hit the snake demon's eyes with two darts. He drew out his sword, split the snake demon in half and took out the snake gall. Jinwa climbed up the Bochi Mountain again, picked mugwort, took it home, soaked the snake gall and herbs in the well, and the patients drank the well water, and all the plagues were cured. Jinwa's deeds spread throughout the city, and also caused fear among the bully and rich owner, who wanted to kill Jinwa. So he said that the old man in the well owed him ten thousand taels of gold and wanted to catch Jinwa to pay off the debt. Facing the ugly face of the rich man, Jinwa jumped into the well, and a golden light burst out. The rich man looked out, and a thousand-foot-high water column gushed out from the well, which rushed him up to the sky and drowned him in the turbulent whirlpool at the gate of the canal. In order to let future generations always remember Jinwa's spirit of fighting against the forces for the happiness of everyone, people called this thousand-year-old well the Wawa Well. There are other versions of the legend of Wawa Well. These legends have a long history and are rich in local and folk characteristics. They are a wonderful flower nurtured by the canal culture. The current situation of Wawa Well Wawa Well is now in the southeast corner of the kindergarten of Laobakou Primary School. On the well, there is an antique red hexagonal pavilion. Wawa Well was built in the Tang Dynasty and has a history of more than 1,000 years. The well body is a brick structure, small at the top and large at the bottom. The well ring is made of bluestone, round, 0.6 meters high, 0.1 meters thick, 0.43 meters in diameter, 10 meters deep, and has water in all seasons. In the past, Wawajing was located at the east corner of Jilong Lane, Dongchang Street. With the reconstruction of the old city and the demolition of old houses, it was later included in the kindergarten of Laobakou Primary School in Huai'an City. In June 2003, Wawajing was listed as the third batch of municipal cultural relics protection units. In 2006, the government allocated special funds to protect the original site, built a hexagonal pavilion around this old well that had gone through vicissitudes and was abandoned, and engraved inscriptions to introduce the history and legends of "Wawajing". Greenery was also planted around the memorial pavilion. Wawajing and the beautiful legend of Wawajing will exist and be passed down forever in Huai'an. (No pictures yet, welcome to provide.)
