Yunnan
🎧  Listen to Introduction

In Qingping, the elephant-foot drum is not only a traditional instrument of the Dai people, but also has a profound historical origin with the Jingpo people. It is a symbol of the unity, progress and integrated development of the ethnic groups in Qingping. The Jingpo people have corresponding elephant-foot drum performances at weddings, funerals and when entering a new house. Different steps represent different prayer contents. It is a performance form that combines entertainment and ethnic culture. The Jingpo people call it "gift song". In the Mangbang group of the Qingping Village Committee of Qingping Township, there is a Dai elephant-foot drum maker named Dian Xiaoyan. The elephant-foot drums he made have a powerful sound and good echo, which has been unanimously recognized by the industry. Dian Xiaoyan has now been recognized by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture as a provincial-level elephant-foot drum maker inheritor. The Guangwai Village Committee of Qingping Township has a Jingpo elephant-foot drum training center. The teaching of the training center allows the Jingpo elephant-foot drum to be better taught and carried forward.
