The Kazakhs are a nation that loves music. It is said that "steeds and songs are the wings of the Kazakhs." Folk songs occupy a very important position in Kazakh music. Wherever there are Kazakh yurts, there are songs. It was selected into the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage list in 20011. Kazakh folk songs refer to songs in general. According to tradition, Kazakh folk music can be divided into two categories: "Kuiyi" and "An". The so-called "Kuiyi" is instrumental music, and "An" is songs. "Kuiyi" is mainly played with the dombra. Generally speaking, these pieces of music are single small pieces of music, and there are also suites composed of several pieces of music. "An" (song) can be divided into several categories according to the content and singing occasion. From a musical point of view, "An" is generally short, with beautiful and catchy tunes. According to the custom of the Kazakh people, when congratulating the birth of a newborn baby, they sing "birth songs"; at weddings, they sing a whole set of humorous "wedding songs" such as "persuasion to marry" and "lifting the veil"; when relatives and friends leave, they sing "farewell songs"; when relatives and friends gather on holidays, they sing duets to each other; when relatives pass away, they sing "funeral songs". In this sense, the Kazakh people spend their lives accompanied by songs. Professional bards are called "Akens" because they often stand on the side of the masses and are therefore loved and respected by the people. Every year, when the herds move to the summer pastures and the grass is lush and the livestock is strong, a traditional "Aken singing meeting" is held. This is a big competition for singing and improvisation of poetry. At that time, "Akens" from all over the country will improvise and sing in front of everyone with their own songs and ask each other questions.
