🎧  Listen to Introduction

Every year on the sixth day of the fifth lunar month, the people of Xindu, Pumen and Renyi towns in Hezhou will spontaneously organize a dragon boat race. The competition venue is on the surface of the Hejiang River in Xindu Town. The participating dragon boats are freely organized by the villages along the river in the three towns. Every year, more than 10 dragon boats participate in the competition. Xindu Dragon Boat Race has a long history and has become a local folk sports activity with strong local characteristics, attracting many people to watch. The audience on both sides of the river is huge, the scene is warm and spectacular, and the people cheer constantly. The length of the dragon boat is about 20 meters, with 20 seats, each seat has 2 people, and a dragon boat can seat 20 to 30 people. There are patterns of fish, shrimps, crabs, etc. on both sides of the dragon boat. The bow is equipped with a dragon head, and the stern is equipped with a wooden rudder shaped like a dragon tail. When rowing, the bow beats the drum, the middle beats the gong, and the stern steers the boat. With the rhythm of the drums, the sailors paddle vigorously, chasing each other, and the scene is even more spectacular. Because some dragon boats have to travel far away, it is difficult to return after the race in Xindu. Therefore, the villages on both sides of Xindu would let the dragon boats and people from far away stay overnight, and then go back after having a full meal the next day. As a result, everyone deepened their feelings, which has continued to this day, and is also known as "Dragon Boat Intimacy" by the locals. A poet once wrote a couplet to praise the dragon boats in Xindu: The flags of the dragon boats crossing the water are as moving as the sea, and the gongs and drums of the southern Xinjiang singing and dancing day are as loud as thunder.
