🎧  Listen to Introduction

Paired clogs are a unique way for young men and women of the Jing ethnic group to choose their partners. When a young man or woman sees his or her ideal partner, in order to test whether they are destined to be together, the elders will separate the pairs of clogs and give them to the young men and women, one pair for the man on the left and one for the woman on the right, and then let them match the clogs themselves. If they match, it means they are destined to be together. This custom comes from a legend. It is said that a long time ago, there was a fisherman's daughter named Shui Jiao on Jing Island. Shui Jiao was very beautiful and all the young men wanted to marry her. Shui Jiao came up with a solution. She asked someone to help her make a few pairs of clogs, and she kept the right clog for herself. Then she buried the others on the beach and asked the young men who wanted to propose to her to find them together. Whoever found the clogs that matched hers would marry him or her. Later, a handsome and hardworking young man named Su Li found a pair of clogs that matched Shui Jiao's. The couple loved each other and lived a happy life. From then on, the Jing people chose their partners in this way. (No pictures available, please provide them.) (No pictures available, please provide them.)
