Xiangdu Frost Festival
The origin of the Frost Festival in Xiangdu "The Frost Festival has existed since ancient times, to commemorate the extraordinary achievements of Changnai. The story is recorded like a song every year, and the brothers and sisters will sing it for another hundred years." In late autumn, this distant and reverberating song was heard at the Frost Festival in Xiangdu Town, Tiandeng County. Many mountain singers also sang to commemorate a deceased Zhuang ethnic heroine, Mrs. Changnai, and her immortal achievements in leading the people to resist foreign enemies and resist the suppression of the court. Who is Mrs. Changnai? What is her connection with the Frost Festival? There are two Frost Festivals in Guangxi, located in Xialei Town, Daxin County and Xiangdu Town, Tiandeng County, respectively. Their origins are similar, both to commemorate Mrs. Changnai, and it has been more than a hundred years since now. According to legend, Mrs. Changnai was from Xialei, Daxin County. She came from a martial arts family and was highly skilled in martial arts. She was named because of her large and long breasts. The ancient Xialei Town was close to the ancient country of Jiaozhi, and was often invaded and robbed by Jiaozhi people, and the people suffered terribly. To this end, Mrs. Chang Nai spontaneously organized the "Hometown Protection Alliance" to resist foreign enemies, winning praise from the people, becoming famous and alarming the court. At that time, the court was corrupt, treacherous officials were in power, compromised with foreign countries and suppressed internally. Mrs. Chang Nai still led the people to defend the country under layers of pressure. In a fierce battle with foreign enemies, Mrs. Chang Nai's in-laws and most of the members of the "Hometown Protection Alliance" died heroically. Mrs. Chang Nai carried her three-year-old son and led the surviving soldiers to retreat to Xiangwu tribe (near Xiangdu Town, Deng County today) to set up camp. When Mrs. Chang Nai saw that Xiangwu tribe was often attacked by bandits and the people suffered, she stepped forward and led her troops to kill bandits, protect local peace, win the support of Xiangwu people, become the leader of Xiangwu tribe, and young people from all walks of life joined. Mrs. Chang Nai's team continued to grow. She took this opportunity to intensify the training of soldiers and horses to prevent foreign enemies and bandits from invading again. Soon, three groups of bandits approached the Xiangwu tribe. The border residents panicked and fled in all directions. Mrs. Changnai was not afraid. She carried her child and led all the people to the foot of Qinglong Mountain (today's Qingfeng Rock area in Xiangdu Town, Deng County) to swear a blood oath and fight the bandits to the death. Mrs. Changnai led the people to fight the bandits for three days and three nights and won a great victory. However, on the way back to the camp, she was shot by a hidden arrow. Both mother and son fell off their horses and died. This day happened to be the day of the frost in the lunar calendar. The grief-stricken local people built a high sacrificial shed. The people of Xialei Town and the surrounding villages came to worship spontaneously with rich offerings. The sacrificial ceremony lasted for three days and three nights. Finally, everyone buried Mrs. Changnai and her son near the location of the Xiangdu Road Team. From then on, every year on the Frost Festival, men, women, old and young in Xiangdu Town went to the tomb of Mrs. Changnai to pay tribute, forming a custom and passed down from generation to generation, so as not to forget this national heroine who sacrificed her life for the people. During the three days and three nights of the annual memorial service for Lady Changnai, young men and women from Xiangdu Town and surrounding towns who came to pay homage to her get to know each other. During the conversation, some destined people gradually developed feelings for each other. When words were not enough to express their feelings, they used folk proverbs and folk songs to express their feelings. After the three days, the lovers could not bear to separate, so they stayed and sang to each other, singing from three days to nine days, and then from nine days to fifteen days. Finally, the unique Xiangdu Frost Song Festival was formed, which has continued to this day. It is also the longest folk song festival in Guangxi with the most singers. Generation after generation of young people met, fell in love, and formed partners in front of Lady Changnai's tomb and at the Frost Song Festival. The memory of Lady Changnai became the starting point of their love. The character of the nanny who refused to yield to the powerful and the character who refused to be depressed by hardships were also inherited by the people of Xiangdu. The locals were upright and cheerful. During the Frost Festival, they often sang humorous and interesting folk songs such as "Singing is like fighting with thrushes. Fight with mine. Your thrush is fed with egg and rice, and I feed it with corn mixed with lime", "A skinny cow can pull a seven-toothed rake and is not afraid of pulling for half a day. Although the cow is skinny, its skin is also skinny, but it can make a drum louder than thunder", which aroused constant laughter from the people around. The memory of the nanny became the starting point of their love. (No pictures, welcome to provide.) (No pictures, welcome to provide.)
