🎧  Listen to Introduction

"Bird whistle" was originally a blowing tool used by farmers in the coastal area of Nanhui to lure birds when catching birds. It was formed in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China with the immigration of immigrants, and has a history of more than 100 years. Its skills and functions evolved from the "bone whistle" used by ancient people for hunting more than 7,000 years ago unearthed in Hemudu, Zhejiang Province. It was once a production custom of the bird-catching group in the area. It has distinct local cultural characteristics and unique cultural traditions, and has had a significant impact on the local and surrounding areas. It marks the production customs and representative figures of a certain social group in the industry and has certain social value. In the 1980s, with the advancement of wild bird protection in my country, the production custom of catching birds no longer exists, and the function of "bird whistle" has undergone a major transformation. It has now been transformed into a folk art performance style and has become an auxiliary tool for bird research institutions to attract wild birds. "Bird whistle" makes excellent use of traditional craftsmanship and skills, reflecting superb folk handicrafts and blowing skills. Bird whistles are finely made, and the airflow is controlled by the tongue cavity to play, which can realistically imitate the calls of more than 20 kinds of wild birds. When playing together, it sounds like a spring bird urging spring to come or a hundred birds paying homage to a phoenix, with unique artistic effects and value, becoming a very popular item in coastal folk culture. As a result, it was approved by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government as the first batch of municipal intangible cultural heritage lists.
