Shantou City is located in the eastern part of Guangdong Province. It is the central city of the eastern Guangdong region. It is known as the "Zou Lu of the Seaside" and has a profound cultural heritage. Arts and crafts have always been in the first place in the Chaoshan area. Wood carving, stone carving, jade carving, shell carving, micro carving, micro calligraphy, bottle painting, lacquer painting, pulp painting, paper flower painting, handmade paper flower, artificial silk flower, gauze, lanterns, incense sculpture, drawn yarn, bead embroidery, machine embroidery, hand embroidery, crochet, porcelain plate painting, colored porcelain, paper cutting, metal craft, bamboo and rattan craft, pottery, sachets, eggs, etc., with complete categories, various varieties, and abundant talents. It was once one of the key production areas in the country and won many awards in various exhibitions and competitions at home and abroad. Gold lacquer wood carving began in the Tang Dynasty and was built in Kaiyuan Temple in Chaozhou in the 26th year of Kaiyuan (738 AD) of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. The wood carving ornaments are still preserved today and have become a historical witness to the art of wood carving. This skill is mainly concentrated in Chaozhou, Chao'an, Raoping, Puning, Shantou, Jieyang, Jiexi, Chaoyang, Meixian, Xingning, and Wuhua. Historically, it was collectively referred to as "Chaozhou woodcarving". With the changes of the times and the continuous changes in the region, Shantou is still the political, economic, and cultural center of the three cities in eastern Guangdong. It has long been collectively referred to as "Chaoshan woodcarving", and is famous for Chaozhou opera, Chaoshan dialect, Chaoshan gongs and drums, etc. If it is still used as "Chaozhou woodcarving", it is inappropriate. From the perspective of Chaoshan's historical evolution and local customs, it is correct to collectively call it "Chaoshan woodcarving". The book "Chinese Arts and Crafts Panorama" published in 2005 has also been renamed "Chaoshan gold lacquer woodcarving". Chaoshan woodcarving has a long history and exquisite skills. It has become one of the four major woodcarvings in my country, along with boxwood carving, Dongyang woodcarving, and Fujian woodcarving. It is made of camphor wood, which is not easily damaged by insects and has a certain toughness. It is carved through several processes and then painted and gilded. As a result, the works are famous at home and abroad for their wide range of themes, rich composition, fine carving, multi-layer hollowing, and magnificent appearance. Shantou has many famous woodcarvers, and their works have won many awards in national and provincial competitions.
