🎧  Listen to Introduction

In the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, relying on the flourishing clan activities, birthdays of gods, and competitions, Shunde Cantonese opera became increasingly prosperous. "When the intercalary month is the birthday of the god and the new temple is completed, there are often competitions. The temple is close to the streets and alleys, and the opera garden is called to play music to entertain the gods. The lights are brilliant, and there are fish and dragons." When Shunde's machine silk reeling industry was developed in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China, the drama activities became more prosperous. The important characteristics of Shunde Cantonese opera are the high artistic level of Cantonese opera and the many famous actors and screenwriters. Qianliju created the distinctive "Ju School" performing art, and Xue Juexian, Ma Shizeng, and Bai Jurong created the "Xue School", "Ma School", and "Bai School" performing art respectively, which are three of the five major schools of modern Cantonese opera. In addition, there are famous Cantonese opera actors such as "Zhongban Wang" Liang Shaofeng, "Sheng Zhou Wang" Luo Jiaquan, "Charity Ling Wang" Xin Ma Shizeng, Bai Xuexian, Mai Yuqing, and there are also famous Cantonese opera musicians and playwrights such as "Da Gong Shu" Luo Jiashu, Xu Ruodai, Wang Jiangnan, and Chen Guanqing. The shrimp-like voice created by Luo Jiabao is also natural and fluent, and unique. Shunde Cantonese opera has a strong folk background and has absorbed folk rap techniques such as the eight-tone gong and drum cabinet, wooden fish song, dragon boat rap, and Nanyin. By studying Shunde Cantonese opera, we can get a glimpse of the development process and characteristics of Guangdong folk rap art, folk beliefs, and clan activities. In 2011, Cantonese opera was included in the third batch of Shunde District's district-level intangible cultural heritage list.
