🎧  Listen to Introduction

Wenshuizi is a unique folk music in Wenshui County. It is also called Yuecunzi because it originated and mainly spread in Yuecun area. Yuecun, Wenshui County is located beside the ancient official road under Luliang Mountain and on the western edge of Taiyuan Basin. There are two explanations for why the locals call this folk music "Zi": one is that the locals call it "Zi" because of its unique musical instrument, the small cymbals; the other is that it is named after the sound "" made by hitting the small cymbals. "Yuecunzi" originated from praying for rain and is closely related to the production methods and living customs of the local people. Oral materials show that Yuecunzi was originally circulated as a local rain-praying ritual music. Due to the unique status of the rain-praying ritual in the production and life of the local people, "Zi" music has been passed down from generation to generation with the rain-praying culture and used as sacrificial music by the local people, while maintaining its solemnity as ritual music; on the other hand, it has gradually combined with the people's living customs and become a ceremonial music for welcoming gods, festivals and daily welcoming guests. The instruments used in Zi music include small cymbals, large cymbals, large cymbals, and large drums (Leigong drums). Due to the different combinations of instruments, unique percussion methods, and playing postures, it presents a unique sound effect. After excavation and sorting, "Zi" music now has repertoires such as "Thunder God Lightning", "Rolling Clouds", "General Rain", and "Celebrating the Harvest". Locals use "array" to refer to the changes in formation when playing Zi music. There are mobile formations such as "Double Dragons Out of Water" and "Two Dragons Playing with Pearls" and fixed formations such as "square array" and "diamond array", which are very consistent with the content of praying for rain. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Yuecunzi was widely used and given new connotations. It became a local folk art form loved by the people. The influence gradually expanded from Yuecun to the entire Wenshui County and became "Wenshuizi". After years of restoration and sorting, Wenshuizi music has participated in national competitions many times and won many awards. It is known as "the best among the gongs and drums in Shanxi" and has become a famous brand of traditional art in Wenshui County. It has a strong loess flavor. Its style is bold and vigorous, rough and unrestrained, simple and heavy. It is a microcosm of the ancient Chinese working people's culture of sacrificial worship and rain-praying, and inherits the essence of Chinese farming culture.
