"Eighteen Methods of Exercise" is a kind of health care exercise that combines medical treatment with sports. It was born in Shanghai, where the atmosphere of modern martial arts is very strong. It has been nearly a century since its inception. This exercise method inherits the concept of "guiding to make the qi harmonious and the body soft" of the traditional Daoyin technique with a history of more than 2,000 years. It was created in the early 20th century by Wang Ziping, a famous martial arts master and famous Chinese medicine practitioner, combining his many years of martial arts experience with trauma therapy. It embodies Wang's unique treatment techniques and academic concepts of trauma therapy and has been well applied in clinical practice. In the 1960s, his student Zhuang Yuanming absorbed the essence of traditional martial arts, aimed at the etiology and pathological characteristics of common and frequently occurring diseases, combined his own clinical experience with modern medical anatomical knowledge on the basis of existing exercise methods, and further developed and re-edited it to form three sets, each set of 18 movements, named "Eighteen Methods of Exercise". This method has a certain preventive and therapeutic effect on neck, shoulder, waist and leg pain, limb joint pain, and chronic bronchitis. Since the 1960s, Zhuang Yuanming first applied it in clinical practice, and then promoted it to the public. It soon became widely popular among various districts and counties in Shanghai, enterprises and institutions, etc. Its development overseas is even more prosperous, covering more than 30 countries and regions except Africa, with more than 10 million practitioners. The 18 methods of practicing qigong advocate "self-treatment", with rich movement design, comprehensive range of movement, scientific and practical. It continues the traditional guidance technique's emphasis on "moving qi", pays attention to "internal strength", and pays attention to precision in movement. However, compared with other traditional guidance techniques, it is simpler and easier to learn, with strong selectivity, strong targeting, and a larger range. Years of promotion and practice have proved its outstanding value in medical care. As a sport with a profound accumulation, this is of great significance in promoting traditional Chinese medical sports and enriching the cultural life of contemporary people. In addition, due to its vigorous development overseas, the 18 methods of practicing qigong have also been playing an important role in promoting cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries. However, with the reform of the national system, the work breaks in enterprises and institutions have been cancelled. In addition, the impact of Western culture and modern popular culture, as well as the decline of traditional culture, have gradually marginalized it. The Shanghai Association of Eighteen Exercises has promoted this art from many aspects, and once achieved brilliant results, but now it is also facing many problems, which has put the inheritance and development of this art into a dilemma.
