Taiyi gongs and drums are popular in Xitaishen Village, Gaocun Township, in the west of Houma. It developed from the court music used for sacrifices by the King of Jin and was named after the sacrifice to Taiyi, the god of the Fen River. It has a history of more than 2,500 years. Taiyi gongs and drums are divided into three parts: high, medium and low. The big drum and big cymbals are the low part; the small drum and small gong are the high part; the big gong is the medium part. When playing, the high and low parts are alternated, with rhythm and intonation. There are five kinds of instruments: big drum, small drum, big gong, small gong and big cymbals. 18 people played, 2 of whom played both big and small drums, 4 pairs of big cymbals, 8 big gongs and 4 small gongs. The drummer is also the conductor of the band, so they can take care of each other when playing. There are six sets of repertoire, consisting of thirteen tunes, namely [Starting Drum], [Old Cow Going Uphill], [Tiger Going Down the Mountain], [Fork Drum], [Big Drum Original], [Small Drum Original], [Turn Drum], [Cha Luo], [Three Sieve Luo], [Bite Drum], [Calling Drum], [Running Drum], and [Falling Drum]. This art form is humorous and vivid, and is a common performance form for local people's etiquette and celebrations. Excavating, collecting, and collating relevant information on Taiyi gongs and drums has important practical significance for studying the music sacrificial rituals of the ancient Jin State in the Spring and Autumn Period, enriching the lives of the people, and building a harmonious society.
