Driving a black donkey
Driving the Black Donkey is a traditional dance widely spread in Lixin area. The dancers stand on stilts and dance with a black donkey prop made of bamboo and wood as the frame and covered with black cloth. Two or three young men follow behind with whips in their hands, waving them and making a sound, pretending to drive the donkey. The dancers dance passionately and their movements are fierce and exaggerated. The performance is humorous and interesting, making the audience laugh. Driving the Black Donkey can be performed by only one person riding the donkey and one person driving the donkey, or multiple people riding and driving the donkey. The two people performing the Black Donkey Dance mainly focus on kicking, striding, jumping, flipping, twisting and other movements. The donkey rider wears stilts and carries the black donkey to do tumbling movements, while the donkey driver has to fall backwards and stand up with stilts, and the movements are very difficult. The collective black donkey dance pays attention to various formations, which are sometimes scattered and sometimes gathered, sometimes in a long snake, sometimes gathered head and tail to form a circle, and sometimes interspersed and winding to dazzle the eyes. The main formations include two horses with manes, all over the world, waves, single chains, double chains, scissors and other formations. Driving black donkeys is a reproduction of people's lifestyle before liberation and even before the Republic of China. It shows the customs and etiquette of women returning to their parents' homes in the old times. It not only has a strong folk customs, but also has the beauty of simple folk dance art.
