Hexian Folk Songs
Hexian County is located in the water network area along the Yangtze River in Ma'anshan City in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It borders Nanjing, Jiangsu Province and Wuhu, Anhui Province, and has a superior location. With a prosperous culture and simple folk customs, the folk songs here are rich and colorful, widely spread, and have been sung for a long time. Hexian folk songs can be traced back to the "Hexian ape man" 300,000 to 400,000 years ago. The shouts of our ancestors to encircle and annihilate wild beasts and the calls for carrying prey are the prototypes of the earliest Hexian folk songs. The main forms of Hexian folk songs are: calls, folk songs, minor tunes, and revolutionary folk songs; their contents are roughly divided into three aspects: labor, love, and folk customs. Generally used to express the thoughts, feelings, and wills of the working people, they have distinct regionality, affinity, strong reality and combativeness. Traditional folk songs include "Beating Chrysanthemum", "Water Carriage Song", "Sister Tells My Lover to Rest Assured", etc., and the calls include "Beating the Stone Call", "Carrying the Load Call", "Pounding the Rice Call", "Dragon Boat Call", "Water Carriage Call", etc. It has a certain influence on Chaohu folk songs and Dangtu folk songs. During the Anti-Japanese War, popular folk songs in He County included "Hit the Japs and Make Them Cry for Their Mothers", "The Water in the River is Yellow Again and Again", "Mountain Monkeys", "If You Want to Be a Soldier, You Must Be a New Fourth Army Soldier", etc., which reflected the determination and courage of the army and the people to unite and defeat the enemy. After the founding of New China, folk songs had new content, mainly reflecting the joy of the working people after their liberation, their revolutionary ideals and their longing for building a new life. In 1957, the folk songs of Puji Township were selected to participate in the National Amateur Art Festival. Female folk singer Li Benlan went to Beijing to sing and received rave reviews. Since the reform and opening up, folk song enthusiasts in He County have used folk song tunes to adapt and create a large number of works that reflect current real life, such as "The Light of Labor", "A Farmhouse Growing in a Painting", "A Brand New Home", etc., which have won awards in various performances and competitions across the country and have a great influence.
