🎧  Listen to Introduction

"Baima-dancing Caogai" is an ancient exorcism and blessing activity of the Baima-dancing people who live in Pingwu County, Mianyang City, Sichuan Province. The Baima-dancing people have always believed in primitive natural religions, do not believe in Lamaism, and do not eat ghee. Every year in the first month of the lunar calendar, each village will "dance Caogai" to worship the mountain god and pray for good weather and no diseases and disasters in the coming year. The entire Caogai dance activity includes: slaughtering sheep and chanting scriptures, bringing out Caogai, suppressing evil, splitting demons, and worshiping mountain gods. The dances of "Caogai" and "Baigai" are important contents of the entire "Caogai dance" activity. The Caogai dance activity generally lasts for two days. During these two days, people from all over the village share mutton and baked buns, dance the round dance and drink barley wine. Everyone is very excited and enthusiastic. Dancing Caogai is actually the carnival of the Baima village. Pingwu "is connected to the Diqiang, and the border is surrounded by sacred mountains. The land is blocked on all sides and the mountains and rivers are heavily blocked." It has been an area inhabited by the Diqiang people since ancient times. In the sixth year of Emperor Gaozu of the Western Han Dynasty (201 BC), the county-level system of Gangdi Dao was established, which was under the jurisdiction of Guanghan County. The ethnic minorities living here in the early years were called "Baima Fan", "Baicao Fan" and "Mugua Fan" due to their different races and places of residence. Baima- is the descendant of the "Baima Fan" in history. Baima- is a nation with unique ethnic characteristics. Baima- has distinct ethnic characteristics and unique ethnic customs in terms of language, culture, customs and national psychology. Because of its unique ethnic characteristics and place of residence are very similar to the "Baima Di" recorded in various historical books, many domestic and foreign experts and scholars, after careful research on its customs, history, beliefs, residence, language and even physiological characteristics, believe that Baima- is the descendant of the lost ancient Di people. "Baima-Tiaocaogai" has a long history. For hundreds of years, due to the lack of transportation and other reasons, "Baima-Tiaocaogai" has not been eroded by foreign cultures and has always maintained its primitive characteristics. It can be said that it is a "living fossil" of cultural form, which contains a lot of information about Baima-primitive culture. Since Baima has no written language and there are few records in ancient books, the ancient "Baima-Tiaocaogai" is particularly important for studying the culture and history of this unique nation.
