Jump judgment
Jumping judge is a traditional dance item in the first batch of representative items of municipal intangible cultural heritage in Huai'an. Cheqiao, a thousand-year-old commercial town, has a beautiful environment, pleasant climate, convenient transportation, and a large number of merchants. It is known as the "Little Nanjing in Northern Jiangsu". Cheqiao Town has begun to take shape in the Northern Song Dynasty and is famous for its "five bridges, thirteen temples, and one hundred and eight lanes". During the "Cheqiao Temple Fair" on the first day of the tenth month of the lunar calendar every year, many people come and go from the south and the north. Folk community performances are held at the temple fair, and "jumping judge" is one of the folk dance forms. The folk dance jumping judge is mainly centered in Cheqiao Town, Chuzhou District, and the radiation area is the surrounding towns and villages. Jumping judge, also known as "jumping judge", is performed by 12 people. Jumping judge is divided into "ground judge" and "lifting judge". "Ground judge" is also called "literary judge". There are two little ghosts beating a big gong to clear the way, four little ghosts holding steel forks, and a literary judge behind. The literary judge wears a mask, a red beard, a green robe, a pen in one hand and a folding paper in the other. The "ground judge" is followed by the "lifting judge". The "lifting judge" is also called the "military judge". It is carried by four porters on a judge frame, which is composed of two fir poles and a special round chair. The military judge sits on it, holding a yin-yang fan in one hand and a court hu in the other, with broad shoulders, chest out, and a low posture. If the dance is performed while marching, the gong sounds loudly, beating into a rhythm of "clang, clang, cha, cha", and the little ghosts jump left and right, showing all kinds of ugly behaviors. The civil judge shows off his power and drives and scolds. The military judge performs on the moving frame, lying on his left and right, flipping and standing upside down, with postures such as Golden Rooster Stands Alone, White Crane Spreads Wings, Lazy Sleeping on the Gum, etc., as fast as a croak, and as slow as a soft finger tapping. The porters who carry the frame keep the same steps, coordinate with the martial judge's movements, and cooperate tacitly. If the performance is held in a square, the porters will first carry the judge frame around the venue, open the venue, and the joint military judge will flip over from the judge frame and land on the ground. The civil judge will also flip on the stage at the same time. The civil and military judges will perform actions such as taking off boots, lifting the back, riding a donkey backwards, and whirlwind kicks. In the middle of the performance, the civil judge will open the letter in his hand to the audience. On one side, it says "good and evil are clearly distinguished", and on the other side, it says "the justice of heaven is clear". The whole performance is exaggerated and humorous. This dance has a history of hundreds of years and is known as "divine judgment" and "living judgment". This dance has been included in the "Chinese Folk Dance Collection". "Jumping judge" was originally a part of the rural Nuo opera. It is a folk dance with primitive religious and superstitious colors performed during the sacrifice to gods and exorcism. It has certain historical and cultural value. Later, due to the need for the gods to go out, the representative and entertaining song and dance clips in the Nuo opera were reprocessed and combined to form a conference-time activity project. There are roughly three types of people who participate in this folk dance: the first is the old boys who sang incense and fire. They were the protagonists of the rural Nuo opera. They usually worked as farmers. When there were rituals of offering sacrifices to gods and expelling epidemics, they would make incense and fire. The second is some literati, such as scholars and private school teachers in the countryside. They are educated, can write lyrics, and can compose music. Many folk tunes and folk songs come from their pens. The third is some craftsmen, that is, craftsmen. After working, they like to participate in this kind of social fire drama very much. Starting from the fun of civilian life, they have created a variety of colorful performances. The so-called "jumping judge" means dressing up as a judge, holding a sword in his hand, catching ghosts and exorcising evil spirits from door to door in the streets and alleys, asking for good luck and some money. In addition to jumping judges, large and small households also hang a portrait of the judge on the wall of the main hall. Although the shapes are not exactly the same, most of them are hideous and terrifying, to show that they catch ghosts and exorcise evil spirits. The general props include: steel fork, mask, red beard, green robe, pen, folding paper, judge's frame, yin-yang fan, court hu, gong, donkey. "Jiaopan" is not only popular in Cheqiao, Chuzhou, but also in Yangzhou, Nantong and other places. "Jiaopan" has beautiful shape, thrilling movements, humorous and funny. It creates a pure and lovely image of Zhong Kui, which is completely different from the common image of the judge holding a green peak and a ferocious face. It has a kind of artistic conception and human beauty. Due to the changes of the times, Tiaopan is on the verge of disappearing. In order to protect and inherit the folk dance of "Tiaopan", the cultural department of Chuzhou District organized a team of professional talents to conduct investigations and research in the countryside, visit old artists, dig out and sort out Tiaopan materials, establish archives for the folk inheritors of "Tiaopan" in Cheqiao, and encourage artists and people of insight to participate in the performance of "Tiaopan". At the same time, it provides and builds a performance platform for "Tiaopan" to restore and maintain its vitality. (No pictures available, please provide them.)
