Xinfan palm weaving is mainly popular in Gongyi, Jinshui, Qushui, Tonglian, Shiyun and other villages under the jurisdiction of Xinfan Town, Xindu District, Chengdu City, Sichuan Province. It is a folk handicraft with local characteristics. Xinfan palm weaving is said to have originated in the Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. According to historical records, Xinfan women had the tradition of "cutting tender palm leaves into silk and weaving sandals" in the late Jiaqing period of the Qing Dynasty. In local villages and farmhouses, women can be seen weaving handicrafts with white and delicate palm silk everywhere. Summer and autumn are the peak seasons of Xinfan palm weaving. In summer, they mainly produce cool hats and slippers, while in autumn, they produce craft palm weaving bags. The raw materials for Xinfan palm weaving mostly come from mountainous areas such as Pengxian, Dayi, Qionglai, and Dujiangyan. In April every year, artists comb the green tender palm leaves they have collected with a needle to make them into strips of palm silk that look like green noodles. Then the palm fibers are twisted into palm ropes, and then fumigated, bleached, and aired to make white and soft materials for use. At the same time, some of the palm fibers are dyed for special decoration of palm weaving objects. There are three main hand-made techniques for Xinfan palm weaving: the first is called the pepper eye technique, which is to cross the warp threads of the palm fibers arranged at equal distances to form a rhombus, and then use two weft threads to pass through the four corners of the rhombus, and so on, to weave a beautiful and regular pattern like a window paper-cut; the second is the dense weaving method, in which the artist uses the same density, equal distance and repeated method to weave finely, and this weaving method is mostly used for weaving products such as shoes and fans; the third is the "human" shape weaving method, that is, the "human" pattern is used to design or control the warp and weft direction or composition of the palm weaving. This weaving method is usually used in the weaving of daily necessities such as hats and mats, and has the characteristics of being beautiful and generous. Xinfan palm weaving not only has high artistic aesthetic value, but also has certain economic value. In recent years, the old artists of Xinfan palm weaving have passed away one after another, making this skill on the verge of a lack of successors, and it is in urgent need of protection.
