Crane dance existed in the palace as early as the Goryeo period of Korea. It has a long history, graceful dance posture and unique performance style, which fully reflects the optimistic character and pursuit of beauty of the Korean people. Crane dance was originally just an interlude in the large-scale palace song and dance "Wufang Churong Dance". During the Lee Dynasty, the crane dance had a new change in performance: two cranes danced around two lotus flowers, becoming an independent "Crane Standing on Lotus Platform Dance". Crane dance was introduced to China by Korean immigrants. In the 1930s, it was reprocessed and sorted out by folk artists to make it more perfect and spread among the people, and was deeply loved by the masses. Crane dance mainly depicts people's mentality of yearning for a better life by simulating the leisurely movements of cranes, such as necking, pecking fish and swinging arms, and vividly expresses the spiritual belief of the Korean people in respecting cranes and their strong pursuit of goodness and beauty. It is the only bird mask dance in Korean folk dance. Its rhythm and movements simulate the form of cranes. Its characteristics are obvious signs, simplicity, softness and stretch. It is a special art performance form, which is obviously different from other Korean dances. There is no fixed accompaniment music for the Crane Dance. It is usually performed to the rhythm of the Gugeli Long and Short Dance. It can be performed by a couple or a group. Both men and women can perform the dance. The performers wear earth-colored trousers, red wooden shoes, and "white crane" or "green crane" tools, and dance around the lotus. The performance includes eight movements: crane squatting, stepping, leg swinging, necking, pecking fish, flying with wings, swinging arms, and crane flying. In the endless repetition of "Gugeli Long and Short Dance", various shapes and movements are made. The Crane Dance has a long history and is a unique dance performance form of the Korean ethnic group. It is of great value in ethnic characteristics and artistic research. It has a high reference value for the study of Korean dance and is of great significance to the enrichment and improvement of Chinese ethnic dance forms. Today, the Korean Crane Dance, a valuable intangible cultural heritage project, has been selected into the "Second Batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage List" in 2008.
