"Panjiang Xiaodiao", also known as "Buyi Xiaoda Music", is popular in the Buyi villages in the Beipanjiang River Basin of Guanling Buyi and Miao Autonomous County, Guizhou Province. Guanling County is located in the western part of Guizhou Province. The county covers an area of 1,472 square kilometers and has a population of 330,000, of which ethnic minorities account for 64.22% of the total population, and the Buyi population is about 70,000, accounting for about 25% of the total population. The average altitude here is 370-1,850 meters, which is a typical karst landform. There are spectacular Huangguoshu Waterfalls, beautiful Mucheng River, peculiar Huajiang Grand Canyon, mysterious Hongya Tianshu and Paleontological Cemetery National Geopark. "Panjiang Xiaodiao" has a long history. It is said that during the Qing Dynasty, a wealthy family surnamed Wu in Dapanjiang Village loved music very much and invited musicians to teach at home. The Wu family also sorted and processed the songs played in various villages and classified them into 106 pieces. Nowadays, the minor tunes that are still loved and played by people mainly include "Yigenli", "Guadifeng", "Xin Bapu", "Dayangdiao", "Xiaoyangdiao", "Guojiediao", "Fengshoudiao", etc. There is a strong local ethnic flavor, beautiful melody, unique style, and a self-contained system. Panjiang minor tune has a relatively fixed and single melody, little rhythm change, and cheerful tune. It is mostly played by a combination of instruments such as Yueqin, Xiao, Erhu, and Muye. The melody is quiet, simple, elegant and pleasant. Most of the Buyi villagers will sing with the music after work or during festivals, and improvise lyrics on the spot. Most of the "Panjiang minor tune" music is in the Zheng mode and Shang mode, and there are also Yu mode and Gong mode. The melody is developed through changing and repetitive techniques such as "flipping", "dragon wagging its tail", "dragon rolling", "golden cicada escaping from its shell", "sowing seeds everywhere", and "empathy". The form structure is regular, with a branch of plum, double flying swallows, three spring willows, and random flower insertion. Its tuning is usually based on the pitch of the bamboo flute. The music is standardized and has strong melody. "Panjiang Xiaodiao" has a beautiful melody, a rigorous musical structure, and a large number of repertoires. It has enriched the cultural life of the people in ethnic minority areas and is deeply loved by the masses. It provides an important basis for the collection, arrangement, and refinement of Buyi music. The music of Panjiang Xiaodiao is entirely passed down orally and memorized, without any written records. Many tunes have been lost; there are fewer and fewer instrument-making craftsmen, and their age is too old, and their craftsmanship is declining; young people are working away from home, and no one is learning to play, so "Panjiang Xiaodiao" has no successors.
