Peasant paintings, also known as modern folk paintings, are a type of modern painting with extensiveness and uniqueness that has been organized and developed by artists from all over the country through years of hard work in the creation of mass cultural and artistic activities, combining local characteristics. It is a new type of plastic art that has been produced and developed on the basis of traditional folk art. In the late 1950s, folk paintings began to appear and develop across the country and the province. In the early 1980s, the concept of modern folk painting was gradually established. Shuicheng peasant paintings, with their free, exaggerated, colorful artistic forms, simple and fragrant national flavor, and bold and sassy artistic techniques, integrate folk batik, embroidery, applique, paper-cutting and other folk arts, and have become a wonderful flower in traditional art. From 1983 to 2008, more than 300 works have participated in various exhibitions across the country and the province; more than 30 works have been collected by the China Folk Art Museum, Zhejiang Art Museum and the organizing committee of national competitions; more than 90 works have been published in various books, newspapers and magazines at all levels, such as "Selected Chinese Modern Folk Paintings", "Guangming Daily", "China Art News", "China Culture News", "Literary News", "Fine Arts", "Xinmin Evening News", "Guizhou Daily", "Shanghai Practical Art", "Guizhou Peasant News", "Guizhou Mass Culture", "Guizhou Art", and "Zhejiang Daily"; more than 100 works have won first, second and third prizes in various exhibitions and competitions across the country and the province, and many works have been sold abroad; "People's Pictorial" (Overseas Edition) No. 518 introduced Shuicheng peasant paintings in a special edition with pictures and texts; in 1999, Guizhou Nationalities Publishing House published the Chinese and English version of the "Chinese Shuicheng Peasant Paintings" painting collection. In February 1988, the Social and Cultural Bureau of the Ministry of Culture named Shuicheng "China's Modern Folk Painting Hometown". In 1989, the "China Art Yearbook" included a special chapter on Shuicheng Painting Village, and the instructors Wang Longwu, Hu Chunwen, Xiong Tingyuan, and the authors Dong Cheng, Xu Chenggui, Luo Xiuzhen, etc. were selected and introduced. In October 1990, the Mass Culture Department of the Ministry of Culture awarded the instructor Wang Longwu the title of "National Painting Village Outstanding Instructor". In September 2004, Dong Cheng was named "2004 China Modern Folk Painting Outstanding Painter" at the Seventh China Art Festival National Modern Folk Painting Painting Village Construction Achievement Exhibition and the Second Xiuzhou China Farmers Painting Art Festival "China Modern Folk Painting Outstanding Painters Nomination Exhibition". In 2007, Yang Zhilin's "Stepping Song and Dancing" won the gold medal in the "Today's China New Countryside" China Hundred Counties Farmers Painting Exhibition at the Third China Farmers Painting Art Festival. In 2008, Shuicheng County was named "China Folk Culture and Art Village" by the Ministry of Culture. In 1990, Shuicheng County sent 5 peasant paintings to Changchun to participate in the "National Painting Village Works Invitational Exhibition". Xu Chenggui's "Autumn Harvest" won the first prize, Dong Cheng's "Yi Nuo Cu Taiji" and Yang Xinling's "Flower Market" won the second prize; in September, Shuicheng County sent 16 peasant paintings to participate in the "Guizhou Province's First Minority Peasant Painting Exhibition", and 12 works won awards. In July 1992, Shuicheng organized 20 works to participate in the Guizhou Province Five Painting Village Modern Folk Painting Exhibition. In 1999, it edited and published "China Shuicheng Peasant Painting". In 2003, Shuicheng County Cultural Center held the 14th Peasant Painting Creation Training Class, with more than 20 students. In 2004, Shuicheng sent 16 peasant paintings to participate in the Second Xiuzhou Chinese Peasant Painting Art Festival. Dong Cheng was named "2004 China Modern Folk Painting Outstanding Painter" and Xu Chengbo was nominated as "2004 China Modern Folk Painting Outstanding Painter". In June, Dong Cheng's "Dancing Bells" won the third prize in the 13th National Star Award Guizhou Fine Arts, Calligraphy, and Photography Selection Exhibition. In November 2005, 30 peasant paintings from Shuicheng were selected for the "Guizhou Modern Folk Painting Exhibition and Painting Village Outstanding Works Exhibition". Dong Cheng's "Catching Tigers" and Yang Mingkai's "Rice Planting Song" won the gold medal, Xu Chengbo's "Another Year with Many Ducks" and other 3 works won the silver medal, and Yang Xinglan and other 9 people won the bronze medal. In December, the Cultural Center held the 15th Peasant Painting Training Class, with more than 30 students. In 2007, Yang Zhilin's "Look, Floating in the Sky" was selected in the 14th National Star Award Guizhou Fine Arts, Calligraphy, and Photography Selection Exhibition. In August, the 2007 China Cool Capital Liupanshui Summer Cultural Festival Shuicheng Farmers’ Painting Exhibition was held, with 100 works on display; in October, 8 works of Shuicheng Farmers’ Painting were selected for the Third China Farmers’ Painting Art Festival "Today's New Rural Areas in China" China Hundred Counties Farmers’ Painting Exhibition, Yang Zhilin's work "Stepping on the Song and Dancing" won the gold medal, which is also the only gold medal in Guizhou, and Xu Chenggui and Luo Dengxiu's works won the Excellence Award. In May 2010, Shuicheng Farmers’ Painting won the 15th "Star Award".
