Schokland and Surroundings

The Schokland peninsula became an island in the 15th century. Due to sea erosion, Schokland was occupied and then abandoned, and in 1859 people had to evacuate the island. But as the Zuiderzee dried up, Schokland has been part of land reclamation since the 1940s. Schokland retains traces of human habitation from prehistoric times. It symbolizes the Dutch people's heroic and long struggle against sea erosion.

Fortress of Suomenlinna

Built by the Swedes in the second half of the 18th century on a group of islands at the entrance to Helsinki harbour, the fortress is a particularly interesting example of European military architecture of the time.

Ha Long Bay

Located in the Gulf of Tonkin, Halong Bay includes approximately 1,600 islands and islets, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone columns. Due to the rugged terrain, most of the islands are uninhabited and unaffected by human activity. The area is not only scenically beautiful, but also of high biological value.

Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California

The site includes 244 islands, islets and coastal areas in the Gulf of California, northeastern Mexico. The Sea of Cortez and its islands are known as a natural laboratory for studying speciation. In addition, almost all of the major oceanographic processes on Earth occur in the site, making it of great research value. The site is a place of stunning natural beauty, made up of rugged islands, towering cliffs and sandy beaches, which contrast with the gorgeous reflections of the desert and the surrounding turquoise waters. There are 695 species of vascular plants, more than any other marine and island property on the World Heritage List. The number of fish species is equally outstanding: 891, 90 of which are endemic. In addition, the site is home to 39% of the world's total marine mammal species and a third of the world's marine cetacean species.

Pearling, Testimony of an Island Economy

The site includes 17 buildings in the city of Muharraq, three offshore oyster farms, part of the coast and the fort of Qal'at Bu Mahir at the southern end of Muharraq Island, from where ships once set out to the oyster farms. Listed buildings include wealthy merchants' houses, shops, warehouses and a mosque. The site is the last intact example of the pearling tradition and the wealth it created during the period when the pearl trade dominated the Gulf economy (from the 2nd century AD to the 1930s, when cultured pearls were developed by Japan). It is also an outstanding example of the traditional use of marine resources and the interaction between humans and the environment that shaped the economic and cultural identity of island society.

Lord Howe Island Group

These islands are outstanding examples of isolated oceanic islands, created by volcanic activity more than 2,000 metres below the seafloor, with spectacular topography and home to numerous endemic species, especially birds.

Henderson Island

Henderson Island is located in the eastern South Pacific and is one of the few atolls in the world whose ecological environment is almost unaffected by human influence. Its isolated geographical location provides an ideal environment for studying island evolution and the dynamics of natural selection. The island is particularly noteworthy for its 10 endemic plant species and 4 land bird species.

Heard and McDonald Islands

Heard Island and McDonald Islands are located in the Southern Ocean, approximately 1,700 km from the Antarctic continent and 4,100 km southwest of Perth. As the only volcanically active subantarctic islands, they "open a window to the Earth", providing opportunities to observe ongoing geomorphic processes and glacial dynamics. Heard Island and McDonald Island are among the world's rare pristine island ecosystems, with unique conservation value in the complete absence of introduced flora and fauna and human impact.

Leting Bodhi Island

Bodhi Island is located on the coast of the Bohai Sea in Leting County. The island covers an area of 2.1 square kilometers (3,133 acres). It is the largest island in North China and the largest ecological island closest to Beijing. The nearly closed natural environment of Bodhi Island has never been disturbed or destroyed by humans. The ecological landscape and island customs complement each other, creating a unique tourist destination in the Bohai Bay. The natural landscape and cultural landscape on Bodhi Island are wonderful and beautiful. It is a provincial ecological tourism demonstration area and is known as "ancient, secluded, strange, wild and leisurely".
