Fujian
🎧  Listen to Introduction

Yunxiao has a long history. Chen Zheng and Chen Yuanguang, father and son of the famous Tang Dynasty generals, established a county here, inherited the Central Plains culture and farming techniques, and were honored by successive dynasties. In order to commemorate their achievements in opening up Zhangzhou, later generations built temples to worship them, worshipped them as gods, and respected them as the Holy King, forming a series of folk activities. Every year during the Lantern Festival, local people have been using the special way of Yunxiao Kaizhang Shengwang patrolling folk customs to commemorate the great achievements of the predecessors of Kaizhang in building Zhangzhou and benefiting the people, and to express their respect and nostalgia for Chen Yuanguang. During the Lantern Festival, the people of Fujian would go to the temple to burn incense, invite opera troupes to perform and entertain the gods, and carry the statues of the gods for parade to show their respect and nostalgia for the Kaizhang Shengwang. The Shengwang patrol is simple and elegant in form, with profound heritage and enduring, which comprehensively displays the traditional craft style and social outlook of the southern Fujian region. It has not only become an important part of the southern Fujian culture, but also a bridge to maintain the blood ties and kinship between compatriots at home and abroad. The belief in the Holy King has been passed down to this day in the annual "Walking the King", and has been constantly maintained and innovated in the continuous development of the people of southern Fujian. The Kaizhang Holy King culture carries the historical memory of Zhangzhou for more than a thousand years and has indelible historical value. By studying the Kaizhang Holy King, we return to the historical scene, experience the historical era recorded in historical books up close, and appreciate the historical heritage accumulated by the Kaizhang Holy King culture for thousands of years. This is of great significance to strengthening cultural confidence and comprehensively inheriting and spreading the Kaizhang Holy King.
